durability of wheels
wheel is out of true and spokes brake. i ride about 10 miles a day over pot-hole infested roads. bike is 2 years old and i feel this is just not right. local reputable bike shop says i ride alot and a $400 bike is not "good enough for heavy use. what say you folks.? can't seem to a straight answer

Take the bike to a Bike shop for service, things that are used, as you say dont stay perfect by them selves. ..
Bike Shop Veteran, since I take care of things myself , I have a couple bikes with 30 Year old wheels .
If you have beat up and damaged your Rims , get another pair of wheels .
may cost half of the $400 .. but I'm not at your town's shop.

What kind of spokes are you running on? How heavy are you? Is it the front or back, or both? And how often? Rim width, tire size, riding style... Lots of variables here that you can tweak to suit your own situation. Generally, as you'd expect, you can sacrifice weight (thicker gauged spokes, more spokes, thicker rim, bigger tires @ lower psi) in order to get more durability.
The LBS I purchased my first bike from (Cannondale Quick CX 4 hybrid) pretty much tried to upsell me on heavier, 36h wheels. I was running 32/32 spokes. Perhaps you could do the same. $100 should get you a more durable rear.
Get a spoke wrench for sub-$10, spend some time on YouTube, and you can have one less problem in a few weeks.

So your wheels are out of true and broken a few spokes after riding 10 miles every day for two years? That is over 7,000 miles. If you got 7,000 miles out of a set of stock wheels on a $400 bike I would say you got your money's worth.
