Not the best picture, but here you go... It's a 1990 750.

Gorgeous! Would love to find one of these in my size.

This is my 3rd built Trek Multitrack. This time I did it as a single speed. 1996 Trek Multitrack 750 powdercoated in Cadillac Gray.

Spotted today. A European spec Trek 750 Trekking.
Owner says she got it new in Germany. Reflective sidewall tires were stock. Bottle generator on braze-on mount, possibly a 12 volt model. Still has the stock tail light on the rack. Headlight broken off. Bracket still there. Violet color. Stock kickstand. Esge fenders.
Shimano STX ders.

I'm putting fenders on my MultiTrack in preparation for the upcoming rainy season here in San Francisco. Anyone know how wide a fender I can use? Looking specifically at Bontrager/Trek's NCS fender set which has options for 28-35mm and 35-45mm tires. I'm sure the 28-35mm will clear, but will the 35-45mm work? I'm currently running 36mm tires and I'd rather not switch to narrower ones, although that's an option too.

hokiefyd 11-23-24 12:23 PM

Yes, the wider fenders should work well. If you're using 36mm tires, then I'd buy 40-45mm fenders.

I'm going to look at this tomorrow. It's been in storage for the last 20 years and is listed on my local FB Marketplace for $50.

On of my fellow volunteers/mechanics at the local coop has this 2000 Pearl White With Gold Decals 700 in a medium ladies frame.
Rather minty looking for 24 years old. It has the quirky dial dash board to show what gear it's in.

I did snag the 720 shown in post #1207 and happily paid the $50 asking price. It is dirty and has some minor scratches and nicks on the frame but the decals are all intact and the bike should clean up nicely. After the Holidays I will give it a refresh replacing the dry-rotted tires and steel handlebars, stem, crankset and front derailleur. I have everything I need in my parts bins. The only minor problem I see is the plastic spring retainers on the cantilever brake arms are cracked and those puppies are hard to find. If anyone has a source for these, please let me know. They are Shimano Altus CT91 brake arms.

Congrats on the purchase! Have you decided on tires?

I have a box of canti take-offs and I'll look for you. Message me if I forget to respond.

Thanks! I appreciate the offer. Worst case, the entire Altus brake arm assemblies are available for less than $15 a pair. As for the tires I have a pair of 700c35c tires that are take offs. They'll do for a start but I'm thinking 38c Gravel Kings long term.

The CT91 brakes are very plentiful and inexpensive. Jenson has them for 8 bucks a pair -- that includes the brake arms, pads, and probably even a new straddle wire as well (though I don't know that for sure).

Trav1s 12-16-24 08:16 PM

This will likely offend the purists but I love how it has turned out. I need a chain and front derailleur to wrap it up. Upgrades are many but reasonable in cost - 105, XTR, GRX, Centos 11, Raceface, and FSA.

You're right that they are plentiful and cheap. Cheaper than sourcing parts for them. Today I ordered two pair for $24 including shipping. I have linear pull brakes in my parts supply but for this bike I want to stay with cantis.

rickpaulos 12-22-24 07:51 PM

There are no Altus plastic parts available. Shimano had a "recall" 25 years ago and sent out replacements but burned through the supply almost immediately. None have been available since. The plastic spring housing cracks, breaks and falls off, releasing the spring tension, allowing the cables to unhook and depending how long the brake shoes are, rotate all the way down into the spokes where the wheels can get locked up. Not good. I gave a rare intact set to to a college engineering student who was learning 3d printing but never heard back. That could have been a small business by itself. At our local bike coop we never see Altus brakes intact so they are replaced with something else. We've probably tossed a couple hundred sets of Altus brakes in to the metal recycle bin. (some 6,000 bikes processed) On my own bikes, I prefer decent v-brakes. They are easier to adjust and work as well or better and usually don't stick out as far. I have a set of Onyx cantis on my 750 and put v-brakes on my 520, 730 and my wife's 730. They don't interfere with panniers as much. They do make stamped steel arm v-brakes for bsos, those are not decent.

Like you I much prefer linear pull. I've kept cantis on my Univega only because it doesn't have a rear-facing cable stop and I didn't care for a clamp-on stop. I'm running Oryx; they work well and are easy to set up because they use linear-pull-style pads with threaded posts.

Yeah, the plastic spring housings are problematic. For that reason, I am going to return the replacement Altus brake arms I purchased for my 720 and go with an old set of Cane Creeks that I found in my parts box.

I like a classic set of cantis just as much as the next guy, but I think I've got all of my rim brake bikes on either linear pull now (or center pull MAFACs, on the old Peugeot) for many of the reasons you listed. Specifically, on my 750, the linear pull brakes offer much better heel clearance on the rear brake position than even the original low profile cantis. Linear pulls also don't have the fork shudder problem that can happen with cantis in some cases -- easily fixed with a fork-mounted cable hanger to fix for cantis, but still one less problem to have to deal with.

I'm all about the v-brakes and these XTR 950s are hard to beat.

My daughter is riding the wheels off of it - she has over 10 miles on it in December. :ride:

I just made some major changes on the 720. I put a Nitto Technomic stem on and Nitto upright bars. I like the position and am looking forward to putting some miles on the new changes.
I love the ride quality of the 720 above any other bike I've had so far.
Thanks

I hope you see my reply to your thread, but we'd love to see pictures of your bike - you have 3 more posts to go. You are in good company. The 90s Multitracks are stellar bikes, and punch way, way above their weight given what is available new today. We are still in the golden era of finding these often 'nearly unridden, hanging in the rafters' bikes. Welcome!

1998 730

I got rid of my last Multitrack because I was offered a good amount of money for it. I decided to look for another one. When I found this, it was covered in grease, dirt, and dust but had very few scratches. The tires were stiff as boards so I swapped those. All of the parts except the seat were original. I converted it to 1x and replaced the Paragon suspension post that came on these bikes as they really didn't work well and are crazy heavy. After tearing it down to the frame and cleaning/polishing everything, I came out with this. My plan was to sell it for a profit since I am not into for much money and it came out so nice. But now that it is done, I almost can't bear to part with it. Especially since selling my last Multitrack and regretting it, but now I am up to five bikes and my wife is rolling the eyeballs a bit.

Love the colors! Bike looks great as it is. Since you got it cheap and don't have much in it I think it's a keeper. Or you could send it my way.

It needs some larger tires... GravelKings SS are on the radar.

I picked up a '96 Trek 720 MultiTrack from FBM just before Christmas. Mostly as something to tinker with this winter. This is as I got it:
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b25a5fda08.jpg

I quickly changed out the saddle for something realistic, and took it for a spin through the neighborhood. It's clearly very upright, but it felt like a pretty nice ride.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a191b50f1f.jpg

My plan turned into making it into a dual mode bike: I bought a Surly Corner Bar, thinking I could use this to quickly swap the controls over and go from a drop bar bike to an upright bike. Here's the drop bar mode:
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4e01764bd2.jpg

I've yet to ride this more than up and down the block:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...df1cd7643e.jpg

My final upright build came out like this:
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3e9a7fdb93.jpg

The basket and the slide on grips make it not such a quick change artist anymore, but that basket makes it super convenient to schlep stuff around. I had a set of full fender ready for this, but they were too narrow for these 38mm tires.

The drivetrain is a Box 9 speed I bought on super closeout, with a Soma crank also purchase on super closeout.

I'm posting this since I have seen some on this thread at times looking for a Trek 520 touring bike and I noticed this 1984 520 for sale on FB Marketplace in KY. Listing says it's tall, $350. Other than seeing it there and posting it here, I have no connection to this bike or listing, just looking to be helpful! Also, it's not nearby so I can't go look at it for you, sorry (and we have four inches of snow coming)!

I just discovered I can't post a link until I have ten posts, so you'll have to look for it yourself: "1984 Trek 520 Bicycle" near Burgin, KY on FB Marketplace.

If there is a better place to post this, please feel free to copy and paste!
