fresh find.
1999 Trek 720 in a 23" frame. Too tall for me so it needs a new owner.
Looks mostly stock except for the cruiser bars. Decent condition.
The 1999 Trek catalog list the 720 in the specs but I don't see a photo for it.
Graphite Pearl color (black).

I’m building up a 1993 trek MT 750 right now. I’m trying to get some reply’s in so I can start posting some pictures. I’m loving this thread.

previous owner tried to do a gravel bike conversion. Didn't work well. The frame is very stiff and bounces all over on gravel. Still has the Trek Invert 700c x 32 tires which were not meant for loose surfaces. The MicroNew 3x7 brake levers are not compatible with the v-brakes on the bike. They also used gear cables for the brakes. Yikes. I do like the 7 speed MegaRange freewheel. Low gear is low enough for the biggest hills. I'll be installing flat bars, the original stem and and grip shifts before flipping it. The 7000 was the base model and it has noticeably heavy parts. I had to change the rear tire & tube and I was surprised at how heavy the rear wheel was. Trek Matrix rim but still rather beefy.Shock seat post seized. came with a rear flat and rear tire worn out but I had a matching tire. note the "aero cage". I put a shorter stem on for today's ride.

as received. Tilt stem all the way forward, out of my reach.

microNEW R7 (right 7 speed)

microNEW L3 (left 3 speed)

microNew right: lower lever for up shifting, upper button for downshift release.

I know you have decided to take it back to its roots and flip it, but I think it could still be an interesting drop-bar all-arounder if not a full gravel bike. Also, it’s fun and less expensive to think about what I might try on a bike that isn’t mine. 😂 I think some larger gum-wall gravel tires could improve the ride, and swapping out the linear pulls for cantilevers and cable stops would fix the pull-ratio problem. But that’s what’s cool about these Multitracks. They are really versatile.

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I had a bike with a mega gear freewheel and I just couldn’t warm to it. I liked having that big low gear but hated the big gap between it and the next one. So, for the rare occasions when I needed a bailout gear, I felt like I had only six cogs for normal use. So I swapped it for a freewheel with a big low gear but relatively even gear spacing. (I eventually changed to 3x8 on that one, but that’s another story.)

93 last year lugged; mine is 91.
Post photos in your gallery and we can move them to the thread until you get to 10 posts

IMO, the Mega-Range freewheel is perfect for a parent towing a kid trailer or trail a bike. That bail out gear is great when going up a steep hill with the extra load. No need to get off the bike and push.

Threw some tires I had on it, but I want to get some 40mm ones on it soon. Looks like the original GripShifts and flat bar were swapped out at some point.
'

I have never seen a MultiTrack that was originally equipped with a flat bar. I have only seen risers on originally equipped models.

Why not a riser bar like a stock MultiTrack?

Don’t get me wrong. I love a 34T cog. I need them to haul myself up a big hill even without pulling a kid in a trailer. I just like having them on a freewheel or cassette with even spacing across the range so there isn’t a 10T jump to the lowest cog. It’s not a religious thing for me. Just a preference.

Playing devil’s advocate to myself, though, the 6 smaller dogs on a MegaRange have smaller jumps in tooth count between them than the cogs do on a wide-spaced freewheel or cassette, which can be useful for finding just the right gear ratio among the 6 when running on the middle or big chainring.

Does anyone know the weight difference between a 700, 720, 730+ frameset? I have my 700 multitrack setup essentially where I want it, but am wondering if it would lose some weight (around 30lb as is) if I had one of the nicer frames.

Check out entries #1086 and 1101, that might give you an idea how light your bike can get

I don’t know the difference specifically in your case but what I would do if I were you is try to find a catalog online for whatever year your Trek is to see if there is anything vastly different in frame and fork material for the various models or if it’s just down to different quality levels or use focus for the components on each level. Short of a lightbulb going on for me there, I would start looking at the weight of the components I have, probably starting with the wheels and crankset/chainrings as places with the potential biggest impact on weight.

I do think that you can spend a lot of money chasing weight loss and usually I think it’s OK to be OK with my bike weighing in the neighborhood of what it was designed to weigh. So that’s another thing to look for if you can find a catalog or reviews for your bike.

Trav1s 02-20-26 03:58 PM

Oh, the 750 received some additional love. Not sure it will stay this way but I got excited to breathe some life into it. I'll probably go back to the original wheelset and the R7000 11 speed stuff is right out unless it is not.

Here is my Multitrack 700 (cromoly seattube only) weighing in at 28 pounds at the moment. This is how I set it up in 2020; just swapped out the cassette from 11-42 back to 11-36. Will probably swap out these wide Easton bars to some more manageable 42cm soon.

I'd agree with you here. The jump from second to smallest is too large. You need just a couple more teeth but then you're spinning out jumping a single gear, and then trying to switch back stinks cause you've lost the momentum in the gear you were already struggling in

1995 Ice Green 730

I have original flat bars, this one came with flats and grip shift. I had it setup with Shimano touring wheels and salsa MotoAce bars which I still have matched with a EA 70 stem. On it are Woodchipper bars, Shimano bar ends and tektro levers..

Very nice. How's she ride? There's an identical one for sale near me; fortunately it's several sizes too large, and I already have a 750 in bits and bits.

Done! Grx810 2x11, XTR vbrakes, and RS700 shifters. It’s pretty sweet and has unique patina.

Great looking Multitrack in a cool color. I love my 720 but would gladly give it up for this beauty.

BrewsterII 04-25-26 08:35 PM

Hi guys
I just picked up this 720 last week off of Craigslist.
Spent the last few days servicing the hubs and putting new tires on it along with a major cleanup.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...00787fff5.jpeg

Edit:
Well, after riding that cheap seat that came on it (hey, I had to try it) I mounted the tried and true B17 Special.
I think brake levers are the next upgrade ……

Recently acquired a lugged 750

Serial number is difficult to make out, maybe 659009? Can anyone look it up? I didn't have any luck. It has a Suntour triple crank. I'm planning on using a Deore rear derailer and wheel with Shimano 11-32 cassette. Do people keep the suntour crank or switch to something else?

Contadino 05-24-26 03:36 PM

I see that I have less than 10 posts so whoever is trying to PM me, I can't get it.

See title.

BrewsterII 05-24-26 06:56 PM

I’m pretty sure it is a 1991 model.

rickpaulos 05-24-26 07:17 PM

1998.5 Trek 720 womens frame.
Not seeing many ladies frame versions posted here.

Original tires (rotted) replaced after the photo was taken. I put some conti slicks on it and it does ride so smooth now.
Rest appears to be stock except the seat.
One oddity is the frame size. 15". That size was never listed in the Trek catalogs until 1999. All the ladies were 17" or 20" for all the years until the 1999 WXS (Womens eXtra Small). I'm guessing this was a mid season size addition in 1998.
The seat post must weigh 2 pounds all by itself. All steel shock post
