I have a pair of Shimano CENTERLOCK to 6-Bolt Mount Adapter, SM-RTAD05 on the way. I'm going to run the current discs and pads for now and swap the others after some research about pads.

Made time to swap the front wheel. The Aksium bearings are much smoother and easier to spin. wheels are lighter than the original. I did a quick caliper alignment and all is good.

Made time to swap the reat wheel between rebuilding the deck and mowing the lawn. Unfortunately life did not allow time for a test ride after the swap...
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a6bfb9c72.jpeg but I did get a new pic with the wheels installed. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a094e929a.jpeg |
So I had the Quick out for a ride this afternoon. After an additional 30 miles, I'm surpised at how much different the Aksiums made on this bike. My average speed higher and Strava is congratulating me for achieving new personal bests when I am not trying to break any records. That being said, I'm building a Synapse to cure my need for speed and have some upgrades planned for the Quick this winter. I'll use the 105 7000 crank/FD/RD on the Synapse and they will be replaced with GRX 800 crank/FD/RD. I'l also going to upgrade to 700x37/38 tires and put the 700x35C Marathon Racers on the Synapse. t2p Thanks for the suggestion.

also consider the Panaracer GK SS if you are looking for 35mm multi purpose tires probably weigh less than the Schwalbe Marathon Racer - and roll better
had them on my Quick 1 D for a while - they worked well … they actually measured close to 37mm installed … they are now on mrs t2p FX 7.5 |
Long past due update. I did the GRX upgrade today. Crank is a GRX600 2x and rear derailleur is a GRX810 and reusing the 11-34 11 speed cassette and pedals I used with the 105 crank. The rear derailleur setup went super easy. And response is like 105 R7000. I’m going to see if I can adjust the front derailleur to work with the GRX crank - I’ll upgrade if needed. The R7000 goodies are destined for the Synapse build.

I swapped out the Schwalbe Marathon Racers for some Continental DoubleFighter IIIs that I got on sale. They are heavier than the Marathon Racers but I like what they offer. I’ll grab some GravelKings and try them in the future. I had to adjust the fender a bit but it was not a big deal. Also, I removed the decals from the Mavic wheels for less flash. I’m loving the adventure bike look and hope to do a long ride with it on the Ohio to Erie Trail.

As I have read, some adjustment of the limit screws and the R7000 105 front derailleur is working great with the GRX crank. As expected, it needs a little bit of trim on the big/big combo. Considering my riding, I think the 46/30 combo will be a much better choice for this bike. GRX upgrade complete. Merry Christmas to me!
Oh yeah, a good cleaning is next up on the list for this one. I did some more maintenance o the Quick while it's in the stand. While cassette/chain got some quality time in the ultrasonic cleaner, I cleaned and lubed the freewheel as the pawls were sticking. The Mavic freewheel is really simple and easy to maintain - another reason I am happy with the wheel choice. I also decided to replace the rear derailleur cable since it was too short and frayed. While the wheels were off, I cleaned up and then installed some better Shimano rotors and adjusted the calipers. I think the back rotor is slightly bent so I'll deal with that another day.

Long awaited update after all of the upgrades in December!
Central Ohio was a beautifully sunny 68 degrees today so I grabbed the Quick and took a spin around the neighborhood. First off - I love the 46/30 GRX crank! The 46 tooth is much more usable (previously had 105 R7000 50/34 crank) and the 30 tooth is just as great. The gear range feels more natural for me and more easily keeps me in a comfortable cadence. The bike feels like it is ready for some credit card touring along the OTET... and that's on the radar for the summer. Other than the need for a little more fine tuning, the GRX800 swap is complete and is quickly becoming my favorite upgrade to the bike. Next - The Conti DoubleFighters, while heavier than the Marathon Racers I had on it before, are a nice addition to the bike. They roll easily and yet have more bite than the Schwalbes. I am thinking about a set of GravelKings (because they are lighter) but will give these some additional trail time before a hasty tire swap. Finally, I removed the Shimano Ice rotors until I get new pads to go with them. |
Yesterday I got out for a few miles between storms. I replaced the Garmin cadence sensor, synced it with the Edge 810, and took a ride. I have a click that is directly related to pedal rotation - no pedal = no click. I'll check BB preload and see what I find out. Definitely like the 46/30 crank set but I am wondering about swapping the rear cassette to 11-32.

^^Make sure the bottom bracket threads are well greased and the chainring bolts are sufficiently tight. This has solved clicking problems for me in the past.

Now to get a break in the rain… |
I installed this mount for the Garmin last week and liked it so much I got one for the Synapse. I’m ready for some warmer weather ant trail time.

Going to swap this stem over the weekend. Subtle compared to the RF piece on it.

Grabbed 15 miles on the OTET and really like the 46/30 paired with the 11-34 cassette. Overall, it feels much more natural on the bike than the 50/34 did. My click is back so I’ll remove the seat post, clean, grease, and reinstall before the next ride. I like the Garmin mount on the stem - it’s solid and does not bounce around. The SDG Bel-Air is a nice saddle too. DoubleFighters are quiet, roll easily, and grip well. They are a bit heavier than the Marathon Racers. I’m looking for some GK SS+ and different bars…

Looks real nice! I wish the Double Fighters were available in a 45mm in addition to the 35mm (in 700c). They seem like good tires that most are pleased with.

Took the Quick out for a 30 mile ride on the Kokosing Gap Trail. I’m thinking a set of more swept back bars would be a nice addition and the saddle is not a good choice for long rides. Love the GRX 46/30 crank for this type of riding. I spent the entire ride on the big ring and it was ideal. It’s nice to have the 30 bailout if needed. I’m still playing with tire pressures and ran 40/45 today. I’ll drop each by 5lbs next ride. I think it’s time to swap a GRX front derailleur to gain a little more chain clearance on the big ring.

In prep for the OTET ride, I swapped bars on the Quick today. I replaced the RF Turbine piece with a pair of black VO Hotbars. The additional rise/sweep puts me in a more comfortable touring position. While I was at it, I lubed up the right shifter which had been a bit sticky. After 7 years (oops) it is time. I need to swap the Selle Anatomica R2 saddle before the trip as it is more comfortable than the orange/black SDG piece for the long rides. I'm still planning to swap in a GRX FD but it will not happen before the trip.

I swapped saddled back to the Selle Anatomica R2 last night and joined a friend to ride from Cleveland to Columbus on the OTET beginning today. We dipped front tire in the lake a little after 9 and hit the trail. After 72 miles, we called it a day. The bar swap was just what was needed for longer rides and the DoubleFighters were great on crushed gravel and pavement. Love the GRX 46/30 crank and 11-34 11 spd cassette - plenty of gear for long climbs.
If I continue to use it for touring, I’ll swap to lighter tires and TPU tubes. |
Threw the Quick on the stand this morning and did a small derailleur adjustment that greatly improved shifting - turned in the B screw and adjusted cable tension. Next leg of the ride to start soon.

Post Day 2 OTET ride update
We rode 41 miles from the west side of Massillon to Killbuck and it was a rough one. My partner and I both underestimated the elevation changes in Holmes County and decided to walk 1/3 of the way up a major hill after several previous had already beat us down. If i was happy with the 46/30 crank the day before, I was thrilled with it yesterday. I spend 98% of the day on the little front ring with the 30/30, 30/32, and 30/34 options being my friend in the hills. The first 2/3 of our day was spend on roads with 1/3 of that being recently tar n chipped with quarter-sized rock making for a very vibration intensive ride. Before leaving, I dropped tire pressure to 35F/40R which helped but a more supple tire would have been appreciated. That being said, I have 250 miles of mixed riding on the Cont DoubleFighters and they are a solid choice for mixed surface riding. I am happy with them on crushed limestone and they are a solid around town choice for someone looking for more grip at the slight expense of weight. I'm tempted to swap the super durable (heavy) Schwalbe tubes for some TPU tube before I invest in different tires. The derailleur alignment/adjustment, saddle tweaks, and tire pressure reduction made before the ride definitely helped survive the day. |

The Quick hit the trails again yesterday and covered another 66 miles without a fuss. After getting a lift to Killbuck, a friend and I headed south to our home. I spent the entire ride on the front 30 tooth ring and was all over the cassette. Brakes worked great and the VO Hotbars/Ergon grips are a great fit for touring. The DoubleFighters show minimal wear and are great on paved and gravel… I wish they were lighter.
