Took my 7.7 in a few days ago for the 90 day tune-up at which time I decided to upgrade the tires to the Continental Gatorskins and add on handlebar extensions. I went in to see if it was ready and it wasn't but they did have the new tires on and it looks wicked. Can't wait to test it out tomorrow.

Any chance we can see a photo of a "real world" 7.3 in white? The Trek website doesn't really capture the true color like an actual person's bike. I know i shouldn't pick my bike based on color, but when everything else seems pretty even....a better looking bike wins out!

Have you ever rode a Trek 7.3, and when evrything else seems pretty even ? What are you comparing it to ?

Some new additions to my bike this past month. New Continental Gatorskin Tires, Handlebar extensions, Rear "strobe" light, Shimano cycling shoes. This has take my average cycling speed up to 20mph.

My wife and I both have Trek 7.9s I had a Coda Comp and hated it, my wife had a 7.3 and we both loved it. Now we have a Renova with another one on order.

That's what I initially thought as well. However, the bike obviously sits much lower than any car or SUV and having it slightly angled works well. I was particularly keen on it's ability to permanently thread on to that part of the bike without me having to take it on and off. Going back to the angle, I did several tests from various distances and heights and there is no problem with visibility. The rear light is by far the most important light to me and with the strobe feature, this light is very, very bright even in daylight. https://bontrager.com/model/08922

To the FX7.7 owners, what parts have you considered making the upgrade in order to reduce the weight of the bike, while I understand weight saving should not be a hybrid's ultimate goal, but just thought anyone wouldn't mind to chime in.
Perhaps the handlebar to a full carbon ? The comfortable but yet a tad heavy stock seat ? For a bike at this price range, I thought the weight might be a little lighter than expected, I think even the lower priced Sirrus weights a little lighter ?

The easiest parts to swap out for weight savings would indeed be a carbon handlebar, and a lighter set of wheels. Probably shave off somewhere between 1-2 pounds by doing those two upgrades.

My biggest weight savings has come from me regularly getting out on the bike and working off my own weight. When I bought the bike I weighed in at 210 pounds and have now just reached 200. You want lighter, get a road bike, otherwise the saving you gain from swapping out new handle bars you gain back as soon as you fill up a bottle or two of water and place it on your bike.

I have a 7.5FX and a 7.9FX (carbon). The 7.5FX weighs in at 23 lbs. 1 oz while the 7.9FX weighs 21 lbs 5 oz. Both are the 17.5" frames. You would have to sink a lot of money into one to get it anywhere near your JBC. I don't think it could be done. The 7.9FX frame was not designed with a light weight as the primary focus. And it is not Trek's top of the line OCLV carbon.

Nice to know actual weight the manufacture's never like to list that, still that's a very respectable weight for that type of bike and never expected it to beat my bike.

My awesome but absurd <20lb hybrid / flat bar road bike
I have finally finished upgrading my Trek 7.5FX. It is truly awesome to ride, but the project was somewhat absurd given the amount of investment that is now in the bike.
But I love it.
The Bike:
- 2009 Trek 7.5FX, satin nickel color, 17.5" frame
- Full Ultegra SL 10-speed drivetrain, including crank (triple 50/39/30), BB (Hollowtech II), FD, RD, chain and 12-23 cassette. Actually the FD is a Shimano FD773.
- Shimano R770 flat bar shifters (same as those that are stock on the 7.7/7.9)
- Avid SD SL brakes with Shimano XTR levers
- Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels with Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase 700cx23 tires
- Easton EC90 carbon flat bar
- Richey WCS carbon seatpost
- Shimano A530 pedals
Overall this bike is a rocket. The Ksyrium Elite wheels with 23mm tires give it a highly responsive road feel, as does the flat bar.
The bike is also much lighter than stock. The stock bike weighed in at 23lb 6oz. Currently it is 19lb 7oz, excluding the saddle-mounted water bottle cages. At least half of the weight reduction is due to the wheels (although the seatpost and handlebars contribute materially to weight reduction as well).
The shifting is incredible compared with the Deore/LX stock setup.
Strangely, the Avid brakes also make a huge difference. Much more so than I expected. The stock SD3 brakes on the Bontrager SSR rims were just terrible.
I realize the pedals are a bit out of character with the rest of the upgrades. I was going to put some Time RXS pedals on to make it compatible with my road bike shoes, but (a) I wanted to be able to use mountain shoes and (b) I wanted a dual pedal with a platform on one side. These are the only features that make the bike a hybrid, IMO, since it implies you can ride it to the store or somewhere where you might want to get off the bike and walk around and thus have walkable shoes. But as far as going on trails, etc, the wheels and tires pretty much take that off the agenda for this bike.
Most people will disagree, but I found the stock saddle perfectly comfortable. So I kept it. I've taken rides as long at 75 miles on this bike and never had a problem with staying comfortable in the saddle.
I won't get into how much I spent on all of this, other than to say that I got the wheels used from Craigslist but most of the other parts new from various internet sources.
Now the problem is when to use this bike. I rode it a bunch last summer but this summer my goal is to do a triathlon so I am training exclusively on my Felt S22 and I haven't ridden the modified 7.5FX hybrid even once. I also just got a CAAD9 road bike, so I fear this flat-bar beauty will languish in my basement. Ironically, my problem is now that I no longer have a "hybrid" to use on trails!! Of course I could put on some other wheels with wider tires.
I should probably put it up for sale on Craigslist, but of course that would just quantify the absurd over-investment I made. I'll probably just use the bike around the city (Chicago) this summer.
And I need to give a shout out to Panthers for giving me the idea to go down the path with these mods.

I am unfortunately going to sell my 7.7 FX, it's the Pearl White one (what is that 2010 year?). I am starting a company and needing all the cash I can get my hands on for the time being. Can anyone chime in and give me some ideas what it is now worth? It's in mint condition, has the upgraded Continental Gator tires. I had it listed for $1595, but a prospective customer is telling it is only worth $1,200. Again, it's in mint condition, with about 300 miles on it. Scroll up some to see the pictures.
