Winter Project Arrives!

Just received my project frame for my winter build. Decided to build a hybrid this year since I gave my 94' Specialized Crossroads to my daughter. I really liked the Crossroads, little heavy being steel, but really a great utility bike. The ex did not want to get her anything to replace the crappy Wallyworld mountain bike she had outgrown. She wanted to keep her Trek 720 here so I let her have the 'roads. I started looking for a steel replacement since I am more concerned with comfort. When I want to go fast I break out the 16lb roadie. Trek 7XX, older Specialized Explorers, Jamis, and Salsa where the main targets. I saw a 1992 Trek 750 on Craigslist that was in poor shape and too expensive, but the blurry picture caught my attention. In doing some research I was right. From 1990 (the first year Trek made the MultiTrack line) to 1993 the 750 frame was made of lugged steel. They were also made at the Waterloo, WI plant instead of Asia. Too cool a lugged steel hybrid frame built in the USA! Also of note is that the geometry is very similar to the 520 touring frame. After some searching I finally found a complete bike on ebay and won it for $134 shipped. It just arrived this morning. The chain was shot and the components are really dirty, but I am planning on replacing everything anyway. Here she is stripped except for the crankset and headset. Off now to my LBS to pick up some tools to remove the Crank and bb.

Excellent. I am fan of the older Treks. Should be a fun project.

Good call. I had a 750 that I set up with ranndoner bars and bar ends. I liked that bike alot (one of my first hybrid coversions). I got an offer I could not refuse, I still keep my eye on craigslist in hopes to score another Trek 7XX series from the early 90's

Sounds like a fun set up. I am still going back and forth on doing a build with a flat bar and XTR shifters and a triple crank, or drops with Ultegra brifters and a compact crank.
