I want new shifters for my Trek 7100

I recently bought a Trek 7100 for a good deal, the only thing I don't like is the shifter. It has the SRAM twist shifters. I thought I would get use to it, but it hasn't happend in the last couple of weeks. I am looking for recommendation on shifters and new handle grips. It is a 21 spd, so I was thinking of the SRAM X.7s. I have no idea on what to look for with handle grips, so any help will be much appreciated.

i can't comment on the sram, not having used them, i have the shimano alivio 7 speed shifters installed on a 1990 trek 800 nasty weather bike. they work fine in rain and snow. i avoided the brake/shifter one piece combo and have the version with separate shifters and brake levers.

Thanks, those look to be a lot cheaper and exactly what I have in mind. Maybe I will go that route.

Is there some advantage to twist shifters I haven't noticed yet? Should I maybe try to get use to them?

Its a personal preference. My suspicion is they're cheaper to manufacture than trigger shifters, thus why they're more common (and cheaper).

That is the impression I get too, since they are on lower end models.

Careful not to mix Sram and Shimano shifters since they have different operating ratios, especially on the rear derailleurs. Keep Sram shifters with Sram rear derailleurs and same with Shimano. I learned this when I installed an Shimano Alivio rear derailleur on my 7100 that originally came with a Sram rear derailleur.

Ok, that is weird, because it has shimano derailers and sram shifters already. So do I then stick with sram or go to shimano?

If the derailleurs are Shimano, you are good to go with anything that is Shimano compatible.....

SRAM shifters are fine with Shimano deraillers as long as they aren't SRAM's ESP 1:1 shifters.

Ok, gotcha. I will probably be safe and stick with shimano then.
