Not making excuses for not doing the miles. I started with a plan in place to reach my goal, 25 miles twice a week, adding 10% every week, currently up to 48 x2. As far as bar ends being unnecessary for completing a century, while true, doesn't change the fact they are probably one of the most recommended items ( including this forum ) for someone looking at doing distant on a hybrid. I could probably struggle my way thru a 62 mile ride tomorrow if I had to but it wouldn't be as easy, injury free or as fun as it would be working up to that goal. Heck, 20 years ago I did a lot of long distance bike touring involving week long rides on a cheesy Schwin Letour, up until I was involved in a hit-run. Now my back just can't handle being stooped over on a road bike which is why I had to go with a hybrid.
You're absolutely right I didn't bother to read the Trek FAQ stating bar ends were incompatible with the FX but I also didn't bother to check their FAQ to see if perhaps the pedals were welded on, preventing me from switching pedals if desired because there was no reason to believe it would be an issue. Get my point? Which by the way would have been moot if Trek had followed thru an released compatible bar ends as they previously said they would.
BTW I do appreciate your blog post regarding the issue, I just wish I would have seen it earlier.

I'm so disappointed with Trek. I bought a 7.3FX a few months ago because I got a good deal on the bike. I originally planned on getting a 7.2 but was talked into the 7.3 by the LBS because of a special sale they were having. Now I'm stuck with buyers remorse because of the lack of bar end options for this bike. Any money I saved from getting such a good price on the bike will be wiped out due to replacing the bar and grips or as
someone else previously stated "These handlebars added cost to the bike while decreasing functionality!". Now Trek has made the situation even worse buy lying to their customers. When Trek received the 1st complaints about the bar end issue, they told people including me that "Trek would release comparable bar ends for the Isozone bars in June". It's now July 1st and available in June has turned into " within the next few months". I can't keep waiting to see when or if Trek follows thru and actually releases compatible bar ends.
A few mounts ago I decided to get serious about my health. I spent the last 8 weeks prepping to run my 1st 5k, which I just completed. My next goal was to ride a metric century this year and a full one next year. For distance riding I would think bar ends would be almost a requirement. Little did I know that I was buying the only bike model in the world that prevents people from easily adding a common accessory.
Now I have to decide if I sale my almost new bike at a loss to replace it with a Sirrus or trash the brand new bar and grips for something else. It's really frustrating because I like the bike overall but can't help the nagging feeling that I was cheated.

True Rob. It's a dumb idea, but still a nice bike. Get new bars.
I've replaced the handlebars and stem on more than one new bike at the time of purchase to make the ride more to my preference. Perhaps the dealer who sold you the bike will take back the defective unit and give you a little credit towards a new set. When I've worked out deals like this it was before finalizing the purchase of the bike so the dealer was willing to negotiate. Even so, the credit was not really as much as the exchanged parts were worth and the price of the replacements were inflated. Such is the the way with dealers.
You might be better off getting something off the web and donating the isobars to your local bike co-op.

I am kind of new to this and ride about 10 miles a day, no hand problems [yet] -- do bar ends make that much of a difference? I have a 7.3fx and love the bike - some seem ready to trade the whole bike because of bars, how about just getting different ones that accept bar ends.

How important are bar ends? I guess if you're sponsored by Ergon, like the guy in front here, Dave Wiens, you run Ergon's integrated grips/barends, but the guy following did not use barends in this 100 mile mountain bike race, nor did most of the riders.

When I first got my hybrid I thought I would need them, so the shop instauled them before I picked it up.
I convinced myself for 3 years that they were essential because they were realy good for leaning my bike up against walls.
I had the poo poos with grips, so I decided to get a set of bolt-on grips. It was then that I realized that in all the years I did BMX, I never needed them, so I decided to give them the flick.
In the past year, I haven't missed them once, because the bar ends are also good for leaning up against walls. (just me)

Just wondering.......has anyone been able to find the promised new bar ends for the Isozone bars on the FX 7.5? I have not been able to find them, and my shop knows nothing about them. Bontrager e-mailed me that they would be available in June. I've e-mailed them again, but have received no answer thus far.

Update...
I just noticed that Trek now lists the following on its website:
Satellite Plus ISOZone Barend Adapter 428359 $11.99
I am not sure exactly what these look like or if they are actually available. I'll have my local dealer order me a a pair for my wife's 7.3 and I will post pics if/when I receive them. Not bar ends exactly as the OP inquired about, but maybe better if it allows us to use whichever standard ones we would like...

So they do actually work. Sorry for dragging my feet and taking so long to get this done, but the bar ends finally came in today. I have had the adapters for a couple weeks so they are definitely "orderable" from Trek/Bontrager dealers. I took a few pics and will try to post them here. First time trying that so if I miss... they'll be here shortly...

I have a 7.5FX on order I'll be interested in adding bar ends when I get the bike.
What do you actually get when you order Satellite Plus ISOZone Barend Adapter 428359 $11.99
Is it just an adapter which allows you to fit any Barend that you choose ?
Or is it the full package including Barends ?
Thanks

Just the adapters and an extra set of Gel inserts. You have to trim them to make room for the adapters so they give you another set. I was able to just carefully trim the ones already on the bike and save the replacements in case the wife changes her mind about the Bar Ends. The bar ends were just something I picked up on Amazon for about $12 IIRC. My LBS only had smaller diameter ones. Good luck with the 7.5.

thanks for the update. I'll have them on order ASAP. Love the Isozone bars and grips, but I just want another option for hand positioning. Appreciate the pics.

First all, thanks very much for the pictures / writeup, I am about to do the same with my bike 7.5fx.
Just a point of clarity, to use the inserts and add barends, did you have to shift the grips that sit on top of the gel inserts (and brake/gear levers) in towards the middle of the handlebars?
Thanks
Ben

Got my order Friday, and installed them as described above. Took only about 20 minutes. I also was able to trim the existing gel inserts, and did not have to use the one's Trek sent. This is now a perfect bike. I love the grip system, it is very comfortable. Now I also have my bar ends back.

Yes, they have to shift to the center the width of the bar end attachment. You also have to trim off a small piece if the gel insert, about the same width. Easy to do.

I was not impressed with the proprietary isozone handlebar, either. I replaced it with an aftermarket bar so I could use the grips I was use to. I'm getting a little scared with some of the strange gimmicks the manufacturers are coming up with. They're just making it harder to customize things to our preferences.
