I passed a road Bike

on my Specialized Crosstrail Hybrid. He was going 25 to 30mh, I was behind him doing 25mph. I saw him at a long distance sped up and passed him at 35mph He was a little shocked.

I would be too. I now have driven both hybrids and road bikes. I was able to keep a 20mph+ pace on the hybrid under a good solid rhythm, but certainly 23mph+ pace on a road bike is easier to maintain.
I was running out of gear at 25mph or so on a hybrid? How did you get it to 35 unless your cadence was through the roof?

It is, but there is also a limit to both machines.

Some hybrids do seem to have pretty low gearing (essentially Mountain Bike equivalent) but others such as my 2010 GF Utopia has some pretty high gears. Cadence isn't a problem until you reach about 40mph, the problem is wind resistance which a road cyclist normally has less of with a lower (more streamlined) posture

A hybrid does indeed not need to have mountainbike gearing ... my highest is a 52 - 11 so it is even higher than 99% of the roadbikes
Doing 35 MPH though ... that HAS to be downhill.
Not to be bragging, but I pass roadies all the time ... in the descents, on the flats and on the hills.
"it's not about the bike"

I frequently pass road bikes that are parked or going the other way.

If you subscribe to the common misconception that flat bars will necessitate a less aerodynamic position, it should be much easier for a hybrid rider to pass a roadie on a climb than on a downhill.

Well, yes, at that moment. My what an odd question.

I tend not to smoke many roadies that badly, 35 is quite impressive. My hybrids gearing, Trek 7.2fx, lets me do that pretty comfortably down hill, I don't feel like my cadence is too crazy, I can even push a bit. The first time I went down a hill that fast I chickened out and braked to about 20. From your OP I thought that you did 35 on flat ground, I was like woah! I can only get up to 29.5!

29,5 ... if that is MPH and on completely flat ground that is pretty good if you can keep that up for more than a few yards.
I can keep that up for about 1 mile but then I'm totally wasted

Obviously you're right about the whole moment thing, but I like to think I'm faster when I pass some one lol.

I can only manage it for about 30 seconds so far, but I can reach it 3 or 4 times (for decreasing amounts of time) before it drops down. A mile is impressive! Maybe in the Spring...

I can understand that javal ... it is probably about the same feeling that I get when I let some modern juppies listen to my 1977 Sansui amplifier.

One time at band camp......

I mean once when I was commuting home with full panniers on my commuter hybrid I ended up at a traffic light with a roadie, at the base of a big hill. I figured, cool, I'll let him pull me up the hill. As soon as the light turned green I tucked in behind him. When we started climbing he was going ridiculously slow. I figured he didn't want someone drafting so I popped out around him and took the lead. I wasn't trying to push the speed or anything, I just road my pace and assumed he was drafting me. When I got up to the top and looked back he was only about 2/3 up the hill.

So it goes, so it goes.

Maybe we're getting an insight on Hybrid rider mentality here.

Most people who own a hybrid were serious about what they wanted to buy and are serious about cycling too. There's probably a higher percentage of "Roadies" and "MTBers" who got a bike on a whim and went for one of the common options. It's ironic but the "Jack of all Trades" hybrid seems to be less common than others but those that do ride them know where they want to be. That being overtaking a Ferrari but while Ferrari's (unless parked) are a little out of our league when we see a slow Roadie we seem to take a understandable delight in over-taking them (or at least I do)

I have beaten a Roadie on a 2-3 mile uphill slope (approx 1 in 10) on my scrappy old buget Giant MTB. That said I'd had a sh**y day and I was taking my anger out by smoking him on the road. When I finally got to the downhill he had no chance because that's when the heavy backpack I was carrying finally did me some good combating the air drag. He had no ballast as he looked like he was out for a sport ride.

Am I just an aggressive rider? There's nothing I enjoy more than beating a hot-hatch off the start at traffic lights. Doesn't last much beyond 15-20mph but it's fun for the moments it lasts.

You're reading too much into it. I got a hybrid cuz it was cheap (a NOS '94 Nishiki for $100 in '08). I didn't even know what a hybrid was when I got it. I just ordered new shifters so I can convert it to a drop bar bike.

Wow, you and some others here are really good at "smoking" other people who are not racing with you but are just out for a ride. They probably just laugh and regard you as complete tools, and rightfully so.
