I have a Trek 7100 https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...on/hybrid/7100 I'd like the option of riding more aerodynamically at times. Is there any reason I'm missing that I couldn't mount a pair of these "Aero bars" on this bike? https://www.amazon.com/Tri-Clip-Handl...ef=pd_sbs_sg_1

Yes you can mount them. I have a set I use when the bike is on the trainer for the winter. I have an oversize stem (31.8) and the only difficulty is that I really wanted to mount mine where the 31.8 transitions down to the 25.4 dia (the tapered portion of the handlebar in close to the stem). You may just want to play with inboard vs outboard position to get them comfy.

What RollCNY said is true ... if your handlebar becomes thinner at some point you can't mount 'em there.

Apart from that I heavily encourage you to get an aerobar ... personally I just totally love mine
In fact ... I just half an hour ago received my new "Planet X stealth bar extensions mark 2" in the mail and will be installing them tomorrow.

My barends are kinda like aero extensions. Cannondale XYZ bars, no longer available.
I'm guessing the TT bike gets the new extensions and the hybrid gets her Profile Jammers back...

Unfortunately, my handlebars are ~22.5mm. The bars are said to fit from 31.8 to 25.4/26.0mm with supplied sleeves. I think I can probably come up with some shims, though. And if not, Amazon has very easy return policies. ;-)

The Profile Jammers never left my hybrid ... the extensions on my TT-bike were of the straight kind and I don't understand why people would want to hurt their wrists like that.
I just come back from a lengthy ride with the new bent extensions and they are super




OP: If you get aerobars, consider the bent type to save your wrists ... also consider putting bartape or grips on them for added comfort.
Your handlebar is very narrow apparently ... do you need special levers and grips for those?
The difference is rather small 26mm to 22.5mm is only 3.5mm of a difference or 1.75 on each side.
I'm sure that with a piece of aluminum you could make custom spacers to make it fit like a glove.

I must admit that I have never seen aero bars on a hybrid before and found it strange that someone would want to do so as the riding position is so much more upright. But today, I was at the wilderness park MUP where I always ride and actually saw a hybrid with areos. It looked strange on a hybrid, but apparently it was functional because the rider looked very comfortable. I still haven't put mine on my road bike.

I have a 5" drop from my seat to my bars on my hybrid. On the trainer, it is a comfortable tuck. I don't do it on the road because I fear sudden ground contact from my lack of coordination

Indeed there is nothing about the use of flat bars that necessitates a "so much more upright" riding position.

No, I am so uncoordinated that I use the aerobars at speeds approaching zero. Additionally, the fat roll it creates is best left in my basement.

On the road, flat bars and Ergon GX2's, baby!

That reminds me, if you use a fan with your trainer, can you boast about the headwind you battled?

You can, on condition that you have the UCI offically calibrate your fan.
Seriously though ... I'm thinking of getting a fan for my trainer because I get too hot on it.

Several years ago, I got a cheap Honeywell Fan from WalMart for my mother to use in the ALF she was in. When she passed away, I didn't think I would use it anymore but it now has a place in front of my trainer and it works like a charm.

I have a stationary bike with a built in fan, but it's really too small to be of much use. I have a small electric one about 10" which works great, though.

I'm in that age bracket too (just!), and bought my current bike thinking I'd go for more "comfort" as well, which I do appreciate. But I'd also like the option of being able to ride with less wind resistance, when I want to (like when I'm spanking some 20 - something who tries to pass me on one of the trails I frequent, which always brings a smile to my aging face ;-) I don't plan to lower the handlebars, raise the seat, and pretend I'm Cadel Evans full-time, life''s too short for that, but I would like a more streamlined position "For Occasional Use Only" ;-)

I was not asked to ride for Team Geritol in '98, (old enough but too slow). They agreed to sell me a T-shirt.


Total years messengering 48, total age 164, if I was on the 4 person team, these numbers would have been higher.

Consider a very tall stem and mount it pointing backwards. Upside down drop bars offer a variety of positions and if your hands still hurt, add aero extensions so you can lean on your elbows occasionally.


Seat as high as Cadel's? It better be unless you are a wee laddie.


Haha just kidding. He claims 5'9" which is about average. His stature is huge in my eyes but he looks shorter than Contador who is 5'9" and the Schlecks of course who tower above typical grand tour riders.
