Getting a new Trek 7100...

from my rewards program at work. It was either this or Nintendo Wii & i'm shure i'll get more workout with the bike! Just received the shipping notice today & am looking forward to getting my bike . Thought about getting the 7000, with no front suspension but the surface streets here are not all that smooth. So it's a trade-off of speed for some comfort. Either way It'll be faster (and lighter) than my old Diamondback MTB! The one thing i'm not positive i'll like is the twist shifters. Would it be worth it to replace them with trigger shifters? That's one thing i liked about my Diamondback which i recently sold. Or are the twist shifters on the 7100 "OK"? Opinion's/comments welcome. Thanks! Tom

Tom, Sweet bike

Don't make a determination on the shifters until you use them. I have bikes with both types and do not prefer one or the other, YMMV.

Post some pics when you get it!

Bikes: Trek 7100, Schwinn Sidewinder mtb

I bought a Trek 7100 for myself for my 55th birthday 2 months ago and love it. I wasn't sure about the twist grip shifting either but it has worked for me. I've put 1300+ miles on it already and I'm 55 and work full time. Very nice bike and ride for the money.

Bikes: TREK 7200 Hybrid

I've been ridding the TREK 7200 for 3 months, have 550 miles on it and like the twist shifters.

Bikes: Schwinn Suburban (35 years old, the bikes not us), 2 Trek 7000, T900 (Tandem), 2 EZ Sports

We test rode both the 7000 and the 7001 and bought the 7000. We thought the 7000 was more responsive and felt better/tighter to us. There is a lot of “give” in the tires on these bikes. If you agree the 7001 feels a little “loose” going to narrower higher pressure tires should take some of that feeling away. We both like the twist shifters. You don’t have to change hand position (or extend fingers) to shift. If you go to trigger shifters you may want to also go to drop bars which are narrower and change the feel again. Either way, you will probably become use to whatever you ride very quickly and think that is the way it should be. Enjoy!

Got the new 7100 last night (Friday).UPS guy always comes to my house last, so it was dark by the time it was delivered & did'nt have a chance to ride it. Overall quality seems good! The shocks on the front are supposed to be adjustable, but i did'nt notice any difference between min & max settings. The seat looks like it will be comfortable, with good padding. I put some of my things from my old mountain bike on it (lights, bottle holder) but could'nt get the rack to fit on the back. Maybe because it's for a "26" MTB? Actually the front holders that screw into the frame under the seat would'nt reach or else it would've worked with about an inch clearance. I tried to mount my Avenir U lock to the frame under the seat, but (1 it would've interfered with the cable going to the shifter, & (2 the nuts & bolts to the mount were too short (thicker frame than MTB) & the U lock would be in the way of the water bottle! I ended up mounting the U lock under the seat. Even this presented a challenge, as without the spacers the mount did'nt tighten & with them the nuts & bolts would'nt reach. So i ended up cutting up a thick rubber band in half & putting it between the mount. Perfect! "I think this will be a comfortable bike, as the riding position is more upright than a road bike & the tires are bigger than i expected.
