I think one big question, what is it about your Giant that you don't like? Also, have you gone to the local shops and gotten a vibe of which one is most helpful/knowledgable? At this price point, you really want to find a shop you like, and then look at the brands they offer. There isn't a huge difference between them.

+1, first shop for the dealer you prefer .. There is a lot of Brands , all made by very few Manufacturers .
A Contract with the Importer defines the differences so they dont Look absolutely identical .
But at a $700 price point they will all be similar .. various parts picks but the bottom line is the bottom line.

A few road-oriented hybrid bikes that come to my mind are...
1. Trek 7.3 FX
2. Specialized Sirrus Sport
3. Marin Fairfax SC3
I've test-ridden them all, and from my limited experience as a cyclist, they all ride well. I believe they're all within your budget as well. Of course, you've GOT to find a bike shop or two and test ride your candidates yourself. I rode more than 10 different bikes last month (a few of them more than once) before I decided which one to buy. Good luck!

Which Giant do you have? I like my Giant Escape and from the way they sell a lot of other people must too.
