Hello all, or Howdy as we say in Texas!
Been cycling off an on for a while. Have a felt and Specialized aluminum frame bikes. With teenage kids its tough to get enough saddle time to be serious. Probably going to get a 29er and spend some time outdoors with the kids since they don't like road biking.
Anyway, happy to be here and hope to learn from the community.

Welcome. Nice idea you have to get a 29 and ride with your kids. Then when they can’t make it with you, you’ve got your road bikes for variety.

Good to see another houstonian! Welcome aboard.
Green Clover, texas is pretty blazing hot in the summer, and I bike commute to work year round. To answer your question (i know that was directed at the OP, so pardon me) I guess it also depends on your heat tolerance and where in the city you are. I'm in the suburbs, close to a large lake that opens into the ocean, and while still hot, it gets breezy down here, making the heat tolerable for me. My commuting distance is only 4 miles, so I tolerate a lot of things on a 25 minute ride. I also have a variable scheduling involving shift work, so the rides are very tolerable during the early morning and night hours. But october-april is fantastic biking weather here IMO, and I long for these months during the rest of the year.

Sounds pretty good, and if the wind salls you just have to keep riding i guess or else the heat soak is going to get you
At least that is what i did when i was once riding in italy at acceptable 34°C (93,2) and blazing sun.
