Northern KY/Cincinnati commuter

Hi there!

I'm new to these forums (obviously), and I'm also fairly new to cycling. I recently purchased a bike for health/fitness purposes and am riding it about 3.5-4 miles each way to and from work. It's the first bike I've bought for this purpose where I actually took into account the things I'll need to achieve the goals that I have (e.g., make it to work alive, get a little healthier, want to continue to cycle). The last bike I owned (and rode to work, incidentally) wasn't a great fit (way too small), the gears didn't work properly, and the brakes were close to going out. This new bike is like a dream, and going to work is a blast now--it certainly beats driving or walking 1/2 mile to the bus stop, that's for sure.

Hello maoglone, what kind of bike have you got, and where are you located? If you haven't found it already, the Commuting forum is a great place to gather information.

Welcome to BF!

hey there, thanks.

I bought a Rocky Mountain Metro 30. Have only ridden it a few times so far, but I'm loving it--it's amazing how much different a bike ride is when you're using something for what it's designed, yeah?

There are a lot of people who have found that out! There are some interesting threads in the General Cycling forum about comfort bikes, for example. 'Comfort bikes' can be comfortable. For me, they are only comfortable for about ten miles, and then they are no longer 'comfort bikes' .

Same as with mountain bikes. It's not that you can't ride them on roads, but road bikes are made for that purpose. But you can switch out tyres on mountain bikes (to slicks) and make the ride easier for the road.

So, yes, that's why there are so many styles of bikes. There's bound to be one to fit you, and to fit the purpose.

Good bike fit is really important as you've found out. You're gonna love commuting on your new steed. Congrats!

Hey Maoglone,

Do you live in NKY or Cincinnati?? Do you ride more than to work and back?? I would ride to work but I work night shift and do not trust the drives out at midnight. Are you a member of the cycle club?? Sorry for so many questions..

I live in NKY, in Bellevue, and work Downtown. Most of the places that my wife and I go are fairly close to where we live (i.e., less than five mi.), so we plan to bike it more often (she just got a new commuter bike, too) than driving--we just haven't gotten to do it yet.

No, I'm not a member of the cycle club.
