My name is Lawrence and I live in San Diego County in California. In High School, I used to ride 14 miles (total miles) round trip between two high schools seven miles apart. The reason for this was to play football at my home school and be apart of a song and dance ensamble at the other. But, in order for me to do that I had to provide my own transportation. My parents refused to get up before 6 AM to take me and they could not bring me back to the other school so the bicycle was the only way.
My dad baught a Red Gazelle Tour de l-Avenir around 1971-72 when I was in elementary school and gave it to me in 1982 at the end of my 10th grade year. We made some modifications by converting it from a 10 speed to 18 speed. My dad could not spread the rear forks to accomidate seven sprokets so he settled for the current six. Yes, current, I still have the bike.
He put some reflective tape on it for me and changed the brake system with some other suddle changes as well. He told me the bike was the lightest touring bike of that time. Not sure about it, but it could be true, I don't think it is now (lol).
