Did you think we missed the "clueless, helpless, backwards blah blah blah" the first time or is this a new template of yours that lets you efficiently inject this or that link into a seemingly complete thought and post it on BF?

When not busy Teeming the Chinese are actually implementing improvements to their transportation infrastructure exceeding even the vaunted capability of MARTA or AMTRAK.

The hand wringing by the LCF faithful over the "World's Worst Traffic Jam" would be better directed at getting similar improvement as previously noted at home.

Didn't know that I needed translation except into Mandarin, but that will do nicely.

I thought most of us were discussing China as an interesting case study. With their rapidly growing wealth, urbanization, and modernization, they have had massive uptake of automobiles, causing huge problems with gridlock and pollution; and they have been attempting to mitigate that by also investing very heavily in mass transit. It's very illustrative, as it replicates and perhaps anticipates developments elsewhere, ie. North America.

Trains are very efficient but they can't get you around town once you've arrived at the station. That's where LCF comes in. Trains connect remote LCF sites, as do passenger aircraft and buses.

I couldn't agree more with what I think you're saying. The Chinese are adapting well, given the circumstances. They're adopting technology from other countries, experimenting with it, and abandoning it when it doesn't suit their needs or improving it when it does. This shows that cultural borrowing is important in today's world, just as it was when the West adopted Chinese technology such as paper, gunpowder, and pasta.

My take on this is a bit pessimistic..I just think humans at the moment have blinders on and just need to build more cars and roads so they can have a J..O..B.. Cars have become a way of life.. We all have jobs that either directly or inderectly depends on them for our livelihood. No matter how car lite or car free we try to be at this moment in history the car comanies have taken over the world. When ever a car manufacturer moves in a town jobs are created ..when they leave jobs and carreers leave also.. I dont know what the answer is but I do know that continued mass production mass comsumption of cars as well as other manufacture can not and will not be tolerated by mother earth... Either in our life time or that of our kids some major upheavel will take place with either earth itself or our inability to provide either air or water or food ....only then will the internal combustion engine be revealed to what it truely is.. The internal workings of HELL........

A bit dramatic I'd say. Lots of local economies have little to do with car manufacturing. And lots of lifestyles have little to do with cars. And that's slowly changing with attention leaving cars, not with cars becoming more entrenched.

Yes, you're pessimistic

We can all argue and debate about how bad the traffic and pollution is in China but in the end it won't change a thing, because none of us lives there and none of us has any influence over there. I think a Chinese would have a good laugh at some of the westerners if they knew that the main reason why some people over here are giving up driving is because they think it will prevent global warming and save the planet.
True ..I believe they will want to impress the ladies with the new high powered toy.....
