We have them here in the raging metropolis of Greenville, NC -- and they're actually some of the coolest cops you've ever met!

There was a few units responding to our ghetto ex-neighbors having some drama, and I saw the guys with the bike racks, and since they were just sort of extra units on that call, they saw me ride up on my road bike and we hung out and talked bikes for a little bit. Lucky guys get to ride Cannondale bikes. Every now and then you can mayyyybe bait them into a race, but mostly not. You can always tell they want to, though. Like... badly.

They will ride here and there but in warmer weather will mostly patrol our Greenways. They have packs on their bikes with sirens and stuff but they all admit to me none of them want to be "that guy on a bike with sirens wailing." GVegas doesn't have full time dedicated bike units but you can see racks on some of the squad cars and you can tell which guys pull bike duty because they're in killer shape.

It also begs saying that the cops in Greenville who aren't on bikes are some of the best friends cyclists have in this town. I had a crash about a week ago and the responding officer was absolutely awesome. On the road, they'll give you a nod from the car, or that "you okay?" look. They set a really great example for how cyclists are to be treated.

Not a cop on a bike, but a short bike/cop story. Not long ago I found myself cycling at 3 in the morning, as you do, and stopping to talk to my voice recorder, as you also do if you get ideas when you ride. Officers in cruiser pull up alongside to ask if I'm alright, and perhaps get a look at why the guy on the bike is talking to his hand.

This is a rural area, not much crime except the occasional gardening implement stolen from a shed. I didn't mind the interruption, and it was a break in what was probably a boring shift for them.

Sorry, that's it, end of story. Just doing my bit to help maintain the profile of cyclists as persons of interest.

A friend and I were pulled over while bicycling in a suburban area late at night. I asked the cop why she had pulled us over and why we were being required to show our IDs. She said that she was investigating some break-ins where TVs and computers were stolen. I told her she was welcome to search my vehicle for the stolen items. Luckily, she just laughed, then apologized for coming on too strong.

There are advantages and disadvantages to using them of course. I policed in Alabama and my department started a bike patrol. Nobody on foot ever got away from me when I was on a bicycle. I grabbed one guy about to punch his girl friend outside of a restaurant one night. He was very surprised when the 180 pound officer wearing twenty pounds of equipment and riding ten miles an hour on two wheels tackled him in mid swing. On the other hand, I had a couple of citizens who refused to talk to me thinking that an officer who drove a car was somehow more important than one who rode a bike.

I work in D.C., and everybody down here has a bike patrol; Capitol police, Park police, Secret Service, Metro transit, and the city.

I've seen two, in the hospital, medical and lawyer office and courthouse area in the next town down the highway. Neither of them was one of the squad car left suspension killers that really needed to be on bikes. And county health care costs continue to rise. It's really none of my business except for the fact that it's my tax dollars, but they should do something besides waddle from the driver's seat of their patrol car to their couch when they get home.

Police on bike's is how I got into cycling I play hockey in winter cycle in summer.There's few bike cop's around here I got caught texting while driving three time's by byicle patrol first time was $240 fine and 6point's and second time was $240 and 6point's and seven day impoundment and third time I had my brand new truck only 18 000km on it still smells new Silverado towed and impounded for 60days and lost my licence for 30days cause of the point's. So long story short bought a bike and byicle shirt and shorts. They also gave me other ticket to the third time they busted me I got tons of tickets got distracted while driving fine plus seatbelt ticket plus window tint ticket and exhaust ticket and also inadquit lighting ticket plus 60day immediate impoundment. So ya them police on bicycles catch more drivers then cop car's I can't complain I got caught three times I do deserve my truck being impounded and the Fine's cause won't of bought a bike if it didn't happen.Picture isn't very good they handcuffed me in the front till cop car came like I would try to out run them on foot lol .
