There used to be a time when forgetting to drink would be an issue. I am pretty good about this now. I am thinking my biggest issue was too much weight, both around my tummy and on the bike. Being more conscious in this area now. I am curious on why you say to move to a rear cassette that does not allow a lower gear inch? If it hadn't been for the granny gears, I might not have made it. I will say that I am looking at a used Roubaix with a 12-28 Utegra groupset. Maybe lightening up my gear, body and bike will ensure a longer brevet next time.

I think a compact crank with 11-32 on the back is a good idea. the thing about using bigger gears on hills is it means you use up your readily available energy, and eating more is the cure. No call for that. Last year I rode with a mountain bike crank 42/28 chain rings, with an 11-32 cassette. I am pretty sure I used low gear on every ride. This year, I was back to a compact crank 50/34, and the same cassette. I wish I could get cassettes with 13 tooth small cog, but the available ones don't go to 32
