We've used Gatorskins on the tandem in 32mm and 28mm. I'm sure there's a difference but it's not a big noticeable difference, at least to me. We started with 32's and have stayed with them except to put 28's on the "racing" wheels.

Wipe your greasy fingers on your black shorts...what I've seen other riders do.

At the bike shop, they sell little individual wipes, but they're overpriced. Several years ago, I found some individual wipes at the auto-parts place, much cheaper, worked great, but when I went to get more, they said they had quit carrying them. They were Fast Orange brand, which is a brand of automotive handcleaner that mechanics use.

The GP4000sII is now available in 28. I've only used the 25s, but they seem no more prone to flats than Gatorskins. I'd like to try the Gravelkings but I haven't found a source with a good discount.

The 700x25 Vittoria Corsa CX measures 27mm wide on a 23mm wide HED rim.

Open Corsa CX - Vittoria.com

At 220 grams and 320 tpi, that's a fast tire.

I'm also using the 700x27 Challenge Parigi-Roubaix and the 700x32 Compass Stampede Pass. Both of these tires are approximately 30mm wide. These tires also provide low rolling resistance. However the lighter and faster Vittoria Corsa CX is as smooth, as flat resistant and as durable as these Randonneuring tires.

I totally get it and don't think others in the group getting a flat would bother me so much, I think I don't like the greasy fingers. Maybe I should simply carry some of those individual wipes with me
If you do it right, you should hardly have to touch the chain. Keep practicing.
