Get well Chuck. FWIW Teton is here racing after breaking his a few weeks ago. You will be back quickly.

Still sick, took pictures and gave a hand up to my young man today. After a solid mid pack TT yesterday he had a bad day and missed the time cut. 13 other folks did the same. Tomorrow we will go ride for fun. Insult to injury his new (for him) SRM has been going in and out so it'll head back to Colorado Monday. 2nd unit I have ever seen go on the fritz, this one just came out of refurb.

He heads home Monday. Ridley will be sad, she has him broken in and throwing the ball correctly.

sorry to hear.

fyi i broke mine on 2/28, got home and had surgery on 3/5. rode 5' on the trainer on 3/8, 10' on 3/9, 1h easy on 3/10 and intervals on 3/11.

showed up in cali to race on 3/28. despite the injury, i rode pretty much the same power in a short TT. my top-end wasn't quite as sharp, but i hung in the RR today. race fitness wasn't quite up to the moves i wanted to make--but it was my first RR of the year and guys are on-point. took some courage to line up, to be honest...and also to hang in there the first few laps.

anyway, the point is the collarbone doesn't have to be much of a setback. i got back in quickly to, i hope, set myself up for later in the season by getting the train back on the tracks.

can give you some more thoughts later on. big fan of the surgery...and some alternative therapies (acupuncture, cupping, scraping) to improve healing.

i was in this race. it was pretty intense. i got gapped in the last km behind a crash, so i failed to get the same time as the leaders. i would not have been a factor in the finish but was hoping to hang on for some pride (esp after thinking of giving up on lap #1 ).

I thought hard about whether to post this, and decided to go ahead. I don't know if you all remember, but Teton wasn't the only rider who went down in the VOS TT. There was a guy in the he road just past the turnaround as us old guys went around it. The word after the race was that he had passed out, and was still undergoing tests as he was kept in a coma. Found out today that he died 4 days after the race. He either had an aneurism while riding, or crashed and the head injury caused it. Speculation is the former. Incredibly, he was on the same team as another guy who had a heart attack while training on a tandem this past year, and also died. Weird ****.

Then there was this, out here. Many people on the Cushman & Wakefield team knew him well, and were very shaken by his passing. He was warming up for the Putah Creek Smackdown TT when a motorist crossed the centerline and hit him head on. There were no witnesses, and the motorist took off. He/she has not been found yet.

We met him at Nationals and my close racing friends new him very well. We are all shaken and upset by the incident as well as the crashes at Turloc. Couple that with RevChuck's crash and others, this was not a great week for cycling.

Is anyone doing Redlands? It has an interesting history and on the NRC calendar. It looks like a perfect race for the SoCal and AZ boys.

I stopped doing Redlands many years ago when the "amateur" races went from a long circuit race to a criterium. I've never done it but I hear it's a tough course.

And I forgot one other fracture that occurred last week (and I do not know all of them). One of the New Jersey racers who attended the AZ camp with us, broke his clavicle the next week in a race. He was in great form at the camp and his A race was Battenkill.

Feeling slightly better. If I'm not coughing up green stuff in a couple of days I may do Redlands. Close enough to the house. Crit. 45+. Seems to fit.

New doc is sending me off to get dye shot in my back. Apparently the numbness stuff is a hard diagnosis. Much easier if I was in screaming pain.

Read the CT report while I was waiting to see him:

Findings: There is a mild compression fracture of L1. There is less than
25% height loss anteriorly. There is a compression fracture of the
superior end-plate of L4, demonstrating approximately 25-50% height loss.
There is mild anterior displacement of the fracture fragments. There is a
minimally displaced fracture of the right transverse process of L2 and L3.
There is a nondisplaced right transverse process fracture of L4.

There is normal alignment of the lumbar spine. There is mild disk space
narrowing at L4-5. Small anterior osteophytes are noted at all levels.

I like the guy so far, and the office.Good magazine selection.

Just got back from the ortho doc's. Outpatient surgery next Thursday, plate going in - screwed and glued. He wants to leave the plate in, too, which appears to be the hot setup from what I've read. He wants to wait until then to give the road rash on my shoulder time to heal somewhat to minimize the risk of infection. He also told me to stop using aspirin and ibuprofen as they inhibit the healing process for the road rash, so I'm switching to acetaminophen. Progress, finally.

I'm in Vegas for back-to-back conferences on (a) Business Intelligence Analytics, and (b) Master Data Management. I cut out of the sessions early yesterday to get a ride in. Headed west from the strip with the intent to ride up Red Rock, which would get me 3.3K in climbing. But what with stoplights and a headwind of up to 20mph, it took me an hour to get to the -start- of the climb, and I had to head back. Getting out of the city (the strip) and back in was not for the faint of heart, and I think I can still taste exhaust fumes. But it was kinda fun pretending to be a NYC style courier going up Las Vegas Blvd, around and through the traffic. Squeezing another ride in won't be easy. Red Rock was an assignment, and hopefully my photo of the entrance sign will suffice. Other assignments are Valley of Fire, and, in true Ex fashion, the ballroom of the MGM Grand.

I was in NYC since Sunday and on my way home on Jet Blue. This post is from 34000 feet and 450 mph. Cycling in Manhattan looked completely crazy although I did see several bike messenger types but no real roadies. I did see an old guy on a Segue Way behind a taxi on Madison Ave. I thought for a moment it was Ex at 444 watts.

Woke up still coughing and draining. Had Jr. not been here I would have followed my own advice last week and took some down time to get well instead of racking up several 100+ TSS days, and going to Disneyland. Probably would be over this by now.

Red wine and cough syrup produce some odd dreams BTW.
