Hi PAers!

Another check-in from Lancaster County. It's a beautiful day!!!! I'm off from work and meeting a friend for a ride. Gotta love our cycling area!

On a side note... I want to pick up a little camera to take with my on rides. I love my Cannon but it's too big for a pocket. I don't need anything fancy, just small emough for a jersey pocket to pull out for still shots here and there. Any suggestions?

Ride on!!!

Looks like a great time - and I love PB & J on a ride - but the schedule doesn't have room this time. I'll keep watching for more, sounds like fun. Especially if that "blasphemous" dude on the vintage Trek shows up!

Sounds like a good ride. If I wasn't doing Pedal Pittsburgh the following day, I would consider joining in the fun. I love BBQ's after a day in the saddle.

Hope it all goes well.

Newbie from South Central PA here. I'm in the Harrisburg area, actually a bit north, but we'll call it Harrisburg. I used to do a lot of mountain biking. I just picked up a late '90's Cannondalte R900 w/ carbon fork, Mavic wheels, Ultegra 600 components.

Not quite back cardiovascular wise yet, but getting there. My "local" route is a 6 mile trek with a good long climb that I'm easily into the mid 30's on the way back down.

Anyone interested in riding, shoot me an email!

It's been a lot of great days here in lancaster! I have been riding a lot more then I thought I would lol! I want to stop by and see the lancaster bike club but they only ride on the weekends and I go to Harrisburg on the weekends. Are there any groups around here that ride on the weekdays?

Also...I am taking a job in york....how feasible would it be to ride to york once or twice? Mapquest says its 25 miles but thats on the highway, and I am not sure how I should go about finding a route that wont get me roadkilled.

I can't give you specific routes, but if you search mapquest leaving out highways, you'll probably get something safer. You'll end up coming through Columbia on the old bridge and over through Wrightsville. Should be a nice rolling ride!

Have you looked into the Harrisburg Bike Club rides?

Yeah I've been on one ride with them. It was fun! I meant to go this weekend but I missed the group by 2 mins and ended up riding around by myself for 3 hours...still a nice day tho. I am going to try and make this weekends C+ rides if there are any.

Yeah i did that thing with mapquest and its all on 462. I've never taken that road before..think it would be safe enough? I mean I can ride 25 miles ok I just don't want to die in the process.

Hey ShaggyMatt,

Maybe you could be interested in the Harrisburg Hills ride. It's a Harrisburg Bike CLub ride on Tuesdays. Leaves from Lenker Park in West Hanover Township at 6:00PM. Distances are in low-mid 20's, will increase with later sunset times. Categorized as C+ (13 - 15 mph). Nice ride.

It's been years since I lived and worked in Lancaster and travelled those roads, and I can only assume the traffic has gotten heavier. If I were you, I'd drive the route at the time of day you'd plan to ride it and see what it's like in reality. Then adjust for a safe route and map it.

Thanks. I'll have to check into that. Right now, I just need my wife to get the baby out! It was bad enough that I went sailing last night, if I was riding, I think she'd have a harder time getting a hold of me!

462 is pretty high traffic road, and once it is out of wrightsville the speed limit picks up a lot. wide shoulder on it, just pick like an early sunday morning and you should be fine. That road leads from downtown york and is very busy during the week.

Which ride?

C+ and D+ out of Carlisle @10A
C out of Newville @10A
C out of Mechanicsburg @1:30P (on a related note, does anyone know if there are B and B+ rides on the regular Mechanicsburg schedule?)
D (social) out of city island at @7:30A

If you're in decent shape, I don't see any reason you couldn't do a C ride on a MTB with knobbies. Rides are generally about 2hr. The Newville ride is going to be about 45mi, so that may be longer.

The details are available from the Newsletter (PDF form).

SB -

I don't think there are regularly scheduled B rides out of Mechanicsburg, but I'm in contact with a couple of B groups which aren't publicized. One of the groups goes regularly Saturday mornings (and you'll recognize quite a few of the folks who ride with us in Hershey), and another goes Saturdays and Sundays - all year 'round. Good bunch, not nearly so twitchy as the group we had Thursday night I'll be happy to put you in touch with them; you're welcome to carpool with me next time I'm going over (maybe Monday?)

Beth

PS Guess who put on a jersey and bike shorts and joined Paul and I for a 32 mile roll this morning?
