NoRacer, that is an awesome resolution, and one that encourage myself and others to now join you on rides. Once it warms up of course :( Until then, I'm relegated to the trainer

Happy New Year MD peoples!

Glad to know you're safe and home. 480 mi/5 days is huge! This what I've got to say to that: https://www.raceacrossamerica.org/re...on/default.php ;)

And props to you for riding your ride despite how close to an even thousand it was. (most riders would've gone around Lake Montebello 16 times)

Happy 2009

Thank you.

See, I screwed up the math. Saturday--107, Sunday--104, Monday 38, Tuesday 40, Wednesday 116. Looks like 405 miles total. Whatever.

RAAM--I wouldn't be able to afford it or leaving work long enough to do it, but I catch your drift, Bob.

Fourteen more miles just wasn't in the cards, especially with the temperature dropping fast and the wind still howling across the open farmlands.

No Racer-When ever I get the chance of pulling up next to you on a century I know you can just smoke me like the Roadrunner, and we appreciate you going easy on us. You should do RAAM and I would be happy to drive the support vehicle.

I couldn't get motivated this morning either. Decided to stay home and make waffles for my kids-from scratch. One of my other New Year resolutions, be a dad.

I'm heading out now to do the 5k that I had originally planned on. Called the Resolution Run, at Paterson Park 2pm. I need to go as I plan on riding down there on my slow 520, sign up starts at 12:30.

I may tool around downtown afterwards, maybe ride out to Fort McHenry. Anybody interested give me a call. 410-371-0270. I can also get e-mail on my Blackberry harrycampbell1@mac.com

Oh I will get out there. I just can't go from 0-50 that fast (and I am at 0) right now.

The Human Car 01-01-09 12:14 PM

I'm going to head out and do some easy cycling with Harry, we're meeting up 2:40 at Paterson Park.

joshandlauri 01-01-09 02:09 PM

Anyone wanna ride tomm? didn't see a rand ride or a bbc ride planned. no plans where to or how long, just if I plan a ride and have to meet someone I'll be a little more motivated to ride, Doesn't matter where we go,north, south, east, west whatever. I can meet up just about anywhere if you want to. Can start anytime looking for 50-70 miles depending on pace, less is ok, gotta be home by about 4pmish little later ok.

Noracer, WOW, congrats on the nearly 12K, thats a hell of a job. Over 400 miles in 5 days, I would be so dead 2 ways (legs dead and wife kill me), You must have lost 10lbs alone cycling, 18000 plus calories.

If no takersthen I'll TRY to wake up early and be motivated.

I hear you. I did my ride today and when I get home my wife Melissa says "I thought you would be home at like 2 o clock" Honey, the race started at 2pm. I got home around 5 or so- not sure where the time went, chatted with a guy I know at the race, changed into my bike stuff, and then went to meet Barry. We rode up to my neighborhood from downtown and then enjoyed a coffee at Starbucks. Good to ride with you Barry, short as it was. Hope you had a safe ride home.

Maybe if I hang at home tomorrow like a good boy I can get some miles in on the weekend. I'll post what I'm doing, if anything.

joshandlauri 01-01-09 06:16 PM

On friday looking for a ride, I forgot me and the wife have plans for friday afternoon, if anyone wants to do an early ride from like 7-10am or so I'll go. If not I'll try to wake up and go solo.

Then saturday I have to put the wifes car back together, All day even as I had to remove the head and repair the block. (like you needed that much info, right?)

Wife works sunday 9-6.

It sucks little time to ride, an indoor trainer for use at naptime is looking better and better.

Pick 1 ride or do both.

Be sure to check your email the night before, and even the morning of, for a weather update.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL...............................Penny

7:30 AM ride most likely will be around 10 miles.
9:00 AM ride will be around 20 miles up the Gwynns Fall Trail

The weather does not look promising but so far no notice of cancellation. I'll update early in the AM if I get notice of cancellation.

By the way old man. :bday: :thumb:

And HTFU ?!! Geez, I had to look that one up. Really.

At your pace of mileage increase (~8%) here's what you've got to look forward to:
For 2009 at age 51 you'll probably ride 12,945 miles (11,986 +8%)
In 2013 at age 55 you'll be after 17,611 miles
But no worries, because at age 60 in 2018 you'll only need to ride 25,877 miles.
And that's not even twice what you did this year. It'll be a piece of cake.

Did someone say cake?

:bday:

Thanks for the ride info, I'd be willing to bet they cancel, does the mayor got out in 25 degree weather?

I would think her group is going to hold a slightly slower pace than I'm looking for, I might go ahead and ride from my house to city hall and do it anyway. route to city hall http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=24854

it is on 100 n.holiday st right off fayette? city hall

Thats nice seeing the Mayor riding, I cut through Canton the other day and saw bike lanes all throughout, Maybe I'll cut through the the city and see the inlaws for breakfast if I'm late or it cancels.

HC203 01-01-09 07:55 PM

Happy Birthday

Missed that, Happy Birthday NR!! Is your birthday January 1st?

HTFU-I think you're already there man.

25 degrees inside my house tonight so don't think I'll be making the early morning mayor's ride.

turn on the heat, at least do it for the kids.

The Human Car 01-01-09 08:15 PM

Josh, The Mayor is getting stronger and doing more every year. I'm not sure how low of a temp she'll ride in but I'll giver her kudos for riding below 40 deg. She's not a 18+mph rider but she does drop a lot of the group. And your route to City Hall is spot on. The rides are blast IMHO, real friendly group.

joshandlauri 01-01-09 08:30 PM

I'll try to be threre, 30 minutes or so should be enough time to get there. Thank you.

a quick thing about Performance Bike @Perring Pkwy, I took the wifes new bike in today as it wasn't shifting right, Chris the bike mechanic, took a look it needed a new cable (binding in the housing)and also found the wheels needed truing and the brakes could be better, all I thought it needed was shifter adjustment. And of course did it all right away. Wife said the bike shifts and brakes better than it ever has.

I didn't expect to get all that found or done.A big thanks to Chris. I offered him food and beer but he declined.
On BF we always hear about the bad, figure I'd throw a little good in there.

The Human Car 01-02-09 05:02 AM

No notice of cancellation for the ride from City Hall and I am on my way out the door.

I'd like to do the mayor's ride, but if it's every Friday then I'll shoot for another day. Slept in 11pm to 7:15 ahhhh.

Mayor ride Report

Left @ 7am 19 degrees, hit what I thought was a small patch of ice, decided to not panic or change course, my luck it was a patch of ice about 30 feet long, I didn't fall I just let my momentum take me through it.

Got to City Hall 730 and found nearly 20 other riders there, We didn't leave til nearly 8am. This is devastating for my hands and feet, To stay warm I got to move! We left city hall went around the harbor, ravens statium, westport and to harbor hospital. We split into 2 groups, I had to stop midway and whip out the hand warmers my hands were frozen, pretty slow pace but not to bad on the way out a little faster my hands would be fine.

We turned around and me, barry and another guy took off doing 18+ some of the way back, I was plenty warm then.

He was much braver than me w/stop signs and red lights.

Barry introduced me to Mark? and he was on a MTB with tires nearly 3" wide and in front ???!!

Mayor was nice and kept up in the lead group with no problem, surprised me. We also had a big black suburban following us everywhere, hersag vehicle. It was funny at one point we were on the trail, out of site, fixing the mayors seat and this suburban comes downthe trail.

Got back to city hall and saw a new group of people congregating for the 9am ride, but I had plans and had to go. I decided to follow the canton/fells point waterline, BAD IDEA, its all cobblestones, ended up on the side walk, I still got to see a lot of the city you wouldn't if in car. Headed up holibird and one $%^&*#$ truck driver, decides to get passed me and ame a right while I'm doing 20mph, I had to slow down quick and then swerves to the left to go around him. Made me mad then, I'm past that.

Barry, thanks fior the invite. If you see the Mayor I never got a chance to thank her, if you don't mind.

I got 25 miles before 930,got a sitter, will be going to Chilis for lunch and see The Day the Earth stood still here shortly. Fun filled day.

HC203 01-02-09 10:03 AM

Damn. should have been there. 'Tis chilly out there, need to pick up some hand warmers.

NR-What are you wearing on your hands and feet to keep the chill out? Are you using hand warmers? I wore my lobster gloves yesterday on my ride downtown and never a problem with them, though not sure about waterproof.

Feet always seem to be an issue even with the big booties, cold creeps in.

Okay-quick Thursday ride report. Left my house around noon to head down to Paterson Park, 5k starts at 2pm. I get about three miles away and realize I don't have cash or credit card. I like to always have at least a few bucks on me. Figure plenty of time to run back. I get back, get cash, Barry calls says he'll meet me at 2:40. I get back on the road, take Roland to University to St. Paul. St. Paul all the way to Baltimore St. When I get to the park I have a hard time finding the sign in, wrong side of park, duh. Get there with ten minutes to the start, lock up tehbike, see a few others have also ridden to the start. I still need to sign in, change shoes, pin number. As soon as I get down to the start the horn blows, off I go. I find myself smiling as I run, having a good time, take little jogging breaks here and there, then try some speed work, passing a few, looking back to make sure I'm not the slowest. I need to work on higher intensity because once my HR gets to say 165 I'm huffing and puffing, and that aint right, though I sprint to the finish and my HR goes 175. I'm not a fast runner and end in about 31 minutes, my usual range. Paterson is quite hilly, undulating. Patterson Park is a treasure which should be maintained a bit more. Feet frozen from the ride.
Back at the church I run into my friend Dave who I did Bike Across Maryland with a few years back. He's not supposed to be running, doctor's orders, says he's going to get back on the bike so you may be meeting him soon as I drag him into the inner circle of BF.
Barry calls, I miss it. I change my base layer and head out to call Barry. We meet up by the Power Plant, think about riding out to the fort but decide on just riding home. A very leisurely ride north on a low traffic day. Barry wants to follow me home so I show him the way I head back from Montebello, cutting through Loyola, Notre Dame and Homeland. We stop in for a very nice coffee break at Starbucks, chat about how f'ed up the car culture is etc etc. A good day.

NoRacer 01-02-09 10:19 AM

Great reports guys! Thanks for sharing.

Harry,

I'm still following this:

I have to preface this with "You Mileage May Vary" (YMMV), because it a personal comfort thing and there are several variables to consider when dressing for the winter, such as:

1) Temp
2) Humidity
3) Wind
4) Average intensity of your ride
5) Amount of Descending
6) Precipitation?
7) Time of exposure to the elements

This is how I dress for various late Fall, Winter, early Spring temps (I bike commute to work all year 'round):

60-70F
----------
bib shorts
short sleeve jersey
bike gloves
thin socks

50-60F
-----------
bib shorts
short sleeve jersey
"gardening" gloves inside bike gloves
base layer "T"
Merino wool arm warmers
thin socks
Fabric shoe covers
Cycling cap under knitted cap or maybe just cycling cap

* sometimes, I place a trash can liner in front of me between the base layer and short sleeve jersey--if it starts getting damp, I take it out and shove it into a pocket for later

40-50F
------------
bib shorts
Merino wool knee/leg warmers (the ones I have are long enough to be either)
short sleeve jersey
"gardening" gloves inside bike gloves or WindStopper gloves with "gardening" gloves as inserts
long sleeve base layer "T" of CoolMax
Merino wool arm warmers
thin socks, plus Merino wool socks (from Sam's Club)
Fabric shoe covers
Cycling cap, under knitted cap

* sometimes, I place a trash can liner in front of me between the base layer and short sleeve jersey--if it starts getting damp, I take it out and shove it into a pocket for later

30-40F
-----------
bib shorts
Merino wool knee/leg warmers (the ones I have are long enough to be either)
long sleeve base layer "T" of CoolMax
WindStopper gloves over "gardening" gloves as glove inserts
heavy weight sweat shirt made of a polyester/acrylic fabric
thin socks, throw-away plastic bag between thin socks and wool socks, Merino wool socks (from Sam's Club)
Fabric shoe covers
Wind breaker
Balaclava and knitted cap or balaclava, cycling cap, under knitted cap
crumpled bandana as windblock for "the boys"

20-30F
-----------
Neoprene and fabric shoe covers
Thicker jacket like the TeamBBC jacket
Balaclava and knitted cap or balaclava, cycling cap, under knitted cap
extra pair of cycling shorts as windblock for "the boys"
Into the teens, it's time to add chemical hand and feet warmers, but sometimes it's more of a matter of keeping dry--everywhere.

The Human Car 01-02-09 03:26 PM

Supplementary ride reports:
Thursday: I decided to time my ride exactly to get there at 2:40, so I left 5 minutes late (life!) and then going down St Paul I could not get into my big ring so I lost another 5 minutes so I arrive at Paterson around 2:50 and not soul runner or cyclist is to be seen so I call Harry and no answer. I loop the park and see one runner and the finish line with the timer now showing 1 hour (Harry said it takes him a half hour) so I assume I missed him and I take off to do an errand in the City (my broken camera replacement is in) and my phone does something funky but I am riding so I wait till I get to Best Buy to figure out what happen. No missed calls but Harry left a voice message (phone is not supposed to do that.) So I call again and Harry is coincidentally heading my way and ~ a mile out. The rest Harry filled in, really good time and the weather was fantastic late in the day.

Friday: A big change over last year when we only got about 4 or 5 riders out over the winter. Most of the group has only been riding a year or two so it's amazing to see so many still at it. The Mayor has really taken to cycling and besides the Friday rides she sometimes does training rides on Sundays. The cold does not bother her.

P.S. I carry spare hand warmers if there is need.

popsicleian 01-02-09 04:09 PM

I had no idea about the rides with the Mayor. I have the occassional Friday off, so I'll definitely partake sometime. Are they every Friday?

joshandlauri 01-02-09 04:11 PM

Barry, you must carry a spare everything. Bet you you even have a spare fork hidden in that extracycle somewhere, just in case. ;)
