@ noracer: I don't know, I am tempted to clip you out of the high res version and post it on the men of foo thread. I would be willing to bet you get more positive comments then what I got.

Now, now--don't be foo-ish. ;)

My kids like the dolls, but I'm thinking it's just extra weight, and kind of uh eccentric.

Looks like the core group of winter dcrand riders. I hope to do the brevet on the 13th, maybe I'll see them then.

Hey Josh, regarding Sat morning mt biking. There's a 5k in Canton that I might be running. I'll let you know for sure by end of week.

Piney Point

I enjoyed the pictures of your group ride. That ride is a part of our club ride on some Saturdays and Sundays, and is always a part of our Tuesday Night Winter Ride. (Piney Point and St. Georges Island) I am sure you enjoyed the Southern Maryland roads as much as we do. :thumb:

The roads were great for the most part. Of course, MD 5 was a bit busy, but that's to be expected. Motor vehicle operators were tolerant, too. I'm sure, while we were riding back to Bryantown in the dark, many approaching motorists wondered what was coming at them--my headlights are as bright as a car's and I "took the lane" as long as no one approached from the rear. Fortunately, no one was fearful for us which is usually indicated by honking horns, flashing lights, or hollering.

You!!! I look like the little Dutch boy. But I guess that's the way I roll.
NR Nice pictures of the ride. I like riding down there....flat.
Bob: welcome back. What town was your reunion in?
Josh: go to the electronic forum. Lots of info on the P7. If memory serves(often it does not) the P7 is really bright but mixed reviews on quality.
Barry thanks for the pics
Harry hope your cold get's better, riding with bob ain't gonna help it:D
Today was first time on a bike since last Wednesday's commute. Rather balmy. My knee has been swelling lately, I think it's due to too much work around the house. Hunters are out in full force. I couldn't cut through my wooded section this morning.

Ah, ha! That's a GOOD excuse to use when someone asks me why I've let my house work go...
Housework causes knee problems!

Cool!

I found out that I can synch my BiM GPS GPX file with the iBike ride file. Once synchronized, it would look something like the attached picture. Using an "Equation of Motion" with speed and elevation as known quantities, a power curve can be generated from the GPX file. The calculated average power from the GPX file was only 3 watts different than the iBike's average.

Sorry--I'm nerding out.

So you are saying your GenIII is nicely accurate? I wouldn't know. I got mine a week and a half ago and haven't even taken it out of the bag yet.

All valid points. I think the trend towards not using directional signals is a simple disregard for others. Our culture is going more and more in that direction, same goes for cell phone etiquette, etc.

I'm happy to say that my old Honda Accord is sitting in the driveway with a dead battery and I could care less.

Two days of inside riding, I gotta get out.

Per my request to the city and some html coding on my part the City's bike lanes, sharrows and trails are now on Google maps: http://www.baltimorespokes.org/stati...70815081612328

The City will be updating the data file for the top map from time to time.

An adventurous BBC club ride for me today. Probably best you didn't join me Harry.

Bad decision #1: Decided on a whim to grab the fixie for the ride.
I rode out to Oregon Ridge and felt strong enough. The ride brought a nice crew of BBC regulars. I lost the group at the first big downhill on Cuba then caught up, then lost them, then caught up. We hit a few long ascents which got me to the front of pack and I started going strong and leading the group.

This clearly, was bad decision #2. I was riding way too hard and began paying for it after 20 miles. Soon, I was not able to catch up after downhills and began hurting on the ascents. A few miles later and I was forced to walk steeper sections. By this point, half of the original riders had pealed off and the few remaining were clearly waiting on me. We passed the NCR trail and it called to me.

Finally, decision #3 was a good one. I yelled to the ride leader, Renee that I was heading down the trail. After a few miles on the level ground of the trail, I got to Hunt Valley. Sat down for a warm late lunch just as the rain started to fall. As soon as I finished, the rain had stopped. I hopped on the light rail and headed home.

Overall, a good ride. It was also a great reminder for me that out-of-the-ordinary stresses on your body can sure surprise you with how fast they can bring you down.

I felt bad for backing out, turned out I had some unexpected work to do anyway, and today should be quite busy. The fixie is a great choice for the NCR though. Mine is a 48-16, no way I'm doing BC hills with that. The extremely fast spinning on a fixie during descents is to me a drawback. On climbing it's kind of a tough coach, no choice but to grind, of course the knees suffer. I thought about whether you were back or not when the hail started slapping up against my studio. The sky looked rather foreboding at around 3pm.

I don't mind saying that I did an hour inside with Coach Troy yesterday. I've always had a problem in winters with cold damp air, my lungs don't handle it well, I believe something to do with staph Pneumonia when I was a kid. I asked my neighbor, the Hopkins pulmanologist if such an event would harm your lung capacity for life. He said there are ways of checking. So I'm thinking of doing that, and a vo2 max test as well. That of course won't keep me in all winter.

Hey commuters, hope you had a safe trip in. As I was impatiently waiting for our van to defrost to take my son to school (he usually takes the bus but he had a big project to transport) I thought if I were riding a bike I would be on my way by now, no need to scrape the windshield of a bike or wait for the defroster to kick in, though suiting up takes a bit longer. Of course in that short trip to Towson High I saw a number of traffic issues, including a nasty two lane blocking accident that happened right in front of me by Towson U. Makes me wonder how many accidents routinely happen in MD during daily commutes how much gas is used/wasted per day. As a non commuter I am always amazed when say coming by bike over the beltway on Falls from Hillside and looking down at the standstill traffic, people do that every day!!

Yeah,... the ride was semi-crappy. At 3:30pm, I step outside to prep the bike to leave and it's raining and sleeting. I kept catching squalls of it all of the way home. When I finally pulled up into my front yard, it had stopped, the sun shone producing a rainbow in the eastern sky.

My favorite part about commuting by bike is passing over the interstates/beltways and looking at the rush hour mess. Always brings a smile to my face.
Stupid stuff I see on my commute: I saw a car this AM that didn't clean its ice off of the windshield. He couldn't see other cars let alone little ole' me. As for the sensors that never turn green at stop lights: At work I have to lay my bike down OR cut through some single track...I cut through the ST. I also zigzag the large rectangle patch sensor in Catonsville. Seems to work.
As for yesterdays commute home....never saw the rain/sleet. We didn't get drop in Beltsville. When I got to my Balto bike I realized it had been raining but skies were clear. Anybody see the moon w/ Venus and Saturn adjacent to it last night. They will not be that close for another 50 years. It was kinda cool looking. Never would have noticed if I was in a car.
Bob: enjoy that fixie while you're still young, soon a 28 X 34 will be your favorite gear:D

My wife came in and told me about that last night, she was so taken by it. I told her it was probably not two stars that she was seeing rather planets. Damn! , I should have taken her advice and checked it out.

Yes! It was the one bright moment of (yet another!) excessively long day at work. As I was walking out of the building in the pitch dark, I looked up and saw that display. Very lovely. I didn't know what I was looking at until I got home (Google is my friend :)) although I knew they were too bright to be stars.

brandenjs 12-02-08 10:03 AM

It was actually Venus and Jupiter. It was very cool to break out the telescope and check it out. Even with an inexpensive scope you can see 3 of Jupiters moons...Very cool indeed..

It's on my list. Unfortunately I made the bright decision that an economic downturn is the perfect time to quit your job and start your own company. Actually it hasn't been a bad decision, but i have been a bit preoccupied with getting the cash flowing rather than getting out to ride.

Yah, I'm among the unemployed/self employed. You would think that having our own schedule would allow us to ride more, not. Sometimes I just feel too guilty to go out in the middle of the day, or I'm too busy. I start at 7am every day and usually work until 5 or 6.
I've been spinning (Coach Troy-Spinervals) the past few days followed by five minutes of a hacking cough. It's actually a good concentrated workout, about 1 hour 15 minutes, keeping it in the aerobic fat burning mode, not exceeding my aerobic threshold. Of course I really don't have an accurate measure of my aerobic threshold.

Do need to get out. Josh-looks like mt. biking will happen.
