Wish me luck in trying to get funding for on-road bike facilities in Maryland.

Good luck, but just a note--you may need to continue bearing weight for that hip to heal strong, so don't go too crazy on the bike. It's not all just muscle rebuilding, I would think.

Anyway, Saturday's ride--DC RAND's "No Unger, No Hunger":

I didn't ride today, because of yesterday and I may not ride tomorrow. TBD. I'm still sore in the muscles and I've been trying to get on top of my hydration all day.

Hey NR, I think we share the same hydration issues. I'm thinking of setting the timer on my HR to go off every 15 minutes to remind me to drink. I've only ridden with Maile once but I recall her talking about you helping her out so..

I did the Sunday Fells Point ride with that group I sometimes ride with. Down through Roland park through Druid Hill to Clipper and Falls Rd. to Fed Hill to the Fort, then around the harbor breaking a multitude of Barry's rules as we ride along the sidewalks that ring the harbor to Canton. Riding the cobbles in Fells Point trying to imagine the European races where they ride them all day, to the Daily Grind for coffee, then back up through Patterson Park and that run up Calvert that always seems to get me. I lost steam at the end though not a bonk just no leg power and it was only a 32 mile ride! Definitely need to get some more miles in, 45 minute spin classes are good for powerful bursts but not endurance. Couple nice short hills in there that I never seem to have trouble with, it's the endurance I need to work on. Oh, didn't feel the back pain at all-weird.
NR-Bennett wiped out today, landed on the same shoulder he had surgery on but no problem I hear.

The Human Car 03-08-09 07:21 PM

NR, thanks for the advice, and more weight bearing exercise is part of my agenda. FWI I'll be staying with a mutual freind, Andrea M.

joshandlauri 03-08-09 07:59 PM

Barry, good luck in washington.
NR, sorry to hear about no ride today, maybe get 300 miles next weekend to make up for it huh.
Harry, I felt like that yesterday, I had good power (I thought), but nearly 2 months of flat rides under 25 miles, really not much endurance. Last 10 miles I just felt slow legs felt a little weak.

Sunday Family Ride
I usually don't do family ride reports but this was good.

I met the wife at Marley, took 20 minutes to unload all the bikes and get the pads, gloves and helmets on the boy and the baby loaded into the trailer.

We made a ride going away from the bridge over rt100, little down hill, the boy took a fall, pretty good too. He was crying his eyes out, he was ok physically (pads and helmet). I told the wife he is soooo going to be scared and not want to get on the bike. She asked him if he wanted to ride in the trailer w/sister. He said no, she said "wanna go home" again a "No". He then said "I want to ride my bike", He then rode for a mile by himself, no help (ok maybe a little). Then we realized as slow as we were going we would never make it to the airplane park and back before dark. So I loaded the boy into the trailer and stuck the front wheel of the bike in the back of the trailer, Off to the park we went. Got to the park, sun going down fast. I dropped off the kids and the wife and bolted back to Marley to get the car, got chased by 2 dogs and flipped the trailer (hit a block of wood,no kids in it), got everyone, got some ice cream and went home

Towing 60 lbs of kids w/a mountain bike is quite a work out!

11 miles
8.8 avg
20 max

Damn. Now that's called HTFU! Very nice.

Barry, I know you can do it, but reconsider whether you should do it. And more power to ya either way. I'm psyched to get riding with you again. BTW: during one of my commutes last week, a car cruised past slow. Barry's face leaned out the window with a half smile, half "I wanna be on the bike" look. No words, but the face spoke volumes.

Been taking it a bit easy recently. Got some soreness in my patella last week, but no twinges since last friday. So... I'm riding my check out of Patuxent River Dreams tomorrow.

Spring is in the air. Yesterday was the first time on a bike since last Weds. Got parents set up by 3ish and took off for an evening ride through Patapsco River valley. Lots of people were out biking and hiking. Most I have EVER seen in the park. People must have had enough of being inside all winter.
Barry: Good luck with your return to the bike but do have a backup plan in case you falter
Josh: great to see you riding w/ the younguns'
GB Patella soreness....hmmm, fixie??

DC Rand is having a full moon wine ride this Tuesday downtown DC. I can't make it but thought one of you guys might be interested.

balto charlie 03-09-09 06:57 AM

NR: Just read your TR. Bummer, hydration problems!! How much do you drink? I gotta think that biking for 100 miles needs over 1 gallon of water...at least. Yesterday I drank 1 liter for 25 miles, then drank another L when I got home.

GB: you're probably riding right now, Enjoy, temps are splendid.

Looks like one of your team left some skin behind-ouch! I think they have banished me from the roster since I haven't raced nor trained with them, though I still may wear the Jersey if I ever get the nerve to join the race. Thinking the Fawn Grove Roubaix!!! I was doing a gut check and some of those dudes is bigger than me.

My ride today was to my son's pre school to pick him up, but he was invited to a friends so I went home with an empty trailer. Some wind but a nice little jaunt, digging these temps.

12 hours in the studio doesn't leave much riding time 6am to 6pm minus that little four to five mile ride at 2:30.

How goes the trailblazing GB? If I don't go out of town next week maybe we can ride on Monday?

I liked the links to the photos and videos. The Womens finish was cool, the last two women that crossed and the one said," we're finished right?" It must have been her first race.

You can see the change in BBC kit for 2009 in this picture--the old kit is there and the new kit:

The Human Car 03-10-09 06:54 AM

I have arrived in DC (well actually close enough for Government work (which I'll be doing. ;)))

I used Google Maps walking directions for a direct route here, 40 miles not terribly bad but what I forgot to think about or notice was the 3700 ft of climbing, I missed a turn so I ended up with 43.8 miles, average speed of 9.2mph. I thought for sure when I was starting out that it would have been 6 or maybe 8mph average but I think I had the wind helping me. To my surprise the route was very nice, the first 20 miles were very scenic and would make a nice club ride, the last 20 miles every major road I was on had 3' shoulders or a bike lane. (In one section the bike lane was the old right hand lane.)

The most amazing revelation on the ride: That's right, I hurt my left knee as well as my hip.
The most risky behavior: Getting off the bike.

The hills were a challenge trying to do them just one legged, I felt like the little engine that could "I think I can, I think I can..." at one point the hill was too much and I stopped to dismount but looking at my GPS I missed my turn so I U-turned and road every hill on my route. :thumb:

Outside of noticing that I lost my bike seat callus nothing else to report besides the normal feeling after a good workout.

greaterbrown 03-10-09 07:43 AM

First Josh's son's story.
Now Barry riding to DC to test out the new titanium hip.
That's hard! Glad you made it in one piece Barry.

Yesterday's ride for me was almost perfect.
Almost perfect route: exception was one super dangerous illegal crossing of rt.29
Almost perfect weather. The exception was the wind which dogged me for at least 50 miles, eliminated all coasting, all riding out of the saddle, and all bike positions other than tucked.

I was pushing for Mt. Airy like it was Oz. And it was. I got a late lunch, got back on the bike, turned east and floated all the way home. :)

HC203 03-10-09 08:42 AM

I have been driving to my gym activities and always thinking how ridiculous that is, to be stuck at lights for a three mile ride. so this morning I got up, got my lights on and rode to the gym, did my spinning class, which was kick ass, then rode home, up Bellemore. Trying to squeeze my minimal exercise time this week.
My B day is tomorrow and I was hoping to continue a trend of taking the day off for a good long ride but no luck this year, unless of course I strap my laptop onto my handle bars. Supposed to rain anyhow.

Hey Barry, way to go! You're an inspiration.

Gb-Yah that wind was like a wall yesterday, but I didn't do 50 miles.

BTW Thanks.

At least you have an excuse, to be slow as dirt that is. Maybe next time I get dropped I'll just lie and say it's that new hip:D

BTW-Last year I actually paid the registration fee to be at the Bike Summit but then got swamped with work so couldn't go. I wrote it off as a contribution to the League. I think we may see some improvements over the next few years with bike and mass transit infrastructure. The new Charles St. bridge is supposed to have a separate bike lane up to Kenilworth, but then what?

You're our voice Barry-thanks.

Glenelg Report

Where were you guys??? this is good riding here and after work hours and not on weekends.

Almost didn't make it as I left the house at 5pm and it was 35 miles away (feel like NR driving to ride starts), I hit traffic on 695 in 2 spots. Got there at 540am. As soon as I was clipped in off they went. Must have been 20 people or so. No talking at all just riding, First words I even heard were at mile 15 when Dan introduced himself. Plenty of stop sign running also, cringe.

I wore 2 layers up top, plus the windbeaker and my semi-heavy gloves, I though it was going to drop to 40 or so, at the end I was sweating my butt off, feet, hands, I was sooo over dressed. I could have wore shorts and jersey and still been hot for sure on this ride.

I hung with the front half for the first few miles, it was fast from the get go. High 20's on the flats, tight fast corners. After the first few miles the "A Train" took off, when I say took off, I never saw them again. Myself, Danny, Stuart and another guy. We all hung together, well behind the a train and well ahead of the others that were behind, due to darkness setting in around 7am, we did the 24 mile loop. Speed wise my Avg speed was nearly 20mph til the last few miles and we hit some pretty good hills. I did get up the hills pretty good. Not as good as I can but 2 months of low stress riding and more than enough soda will do that.

I was soo thankful for only 24 miles, It felt good knowing I could keep up them and not die.

I did get home and promptly made a second plate of dinner, steak, potato salad and brocolli, mmm mmm good

Also after seeing how fast the A group was I'm going to need to go ride with the boy so I can feel fast again.

I'm going to try to go next tues, if not I will go the following.

Total 24 miles
17.8 avg
2000 feet climbing (I'll know for sure after stuart post it, Danny had 1800+ on his but he said stuarts is gps tracked)

Good going, Josh! :thumb:

Yeah, Stuart [Lamb] rides primarily with the BBC when he's in town.

The Glenelg Gang have a Yahoo listserv if you want to join it, if you haven't already:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GlenelgGang/

You can keep up with the latest chit-chat.

That's pretty good elevation for a 24 mile ride.
