Advice on route-My family is staying in Wildwood Crest for a week in July and of course the idea has crossed my mind of riding up. I know NR has experience up and over the Susquehanna and the bay through Chesapeake City and Charlie had some info on the canal crossing, or at least I recall. Anyway, here it is.

TDP report- Came across a cool building in an otherwise god forsaken neighborhood, the American Brewery building, never saw before, remarkable, I just gawked for a few minutes then thought it wise to skoot as I was all alone on the route. Amazing that these things are possible and that good people are reversing the tide of abandonemnet of these areas. The Hopkins sponsored Moveable Feast building a few blocks over is another great example.
I did miss quite a few turns but I guess that's the nature of urban riding, up and down curbs, through the Giant parking lot etc. Good to see Ellen and family there, their impressive young son was able to reiterate their exact mileage from a tour of Cape Cod last summer.
And the beer was good before I biked back home. I had my handlebar bag and panniers on the 520 so even though unloaded it was a good workout. I do like riding around the stadiums, something about the scale and being on roads that go otherwise unnoticed. The jazz trio were also very good, and the half of Chipoltle burrito hit the spot.
I'm off tomorrow for a few days of camping out at Cape Henlopen or thereabouts with the boys, plan on bringing the fixed for some flat fun while they snooze.

Harry, good to see you as well. Matter-of-fact, guess I should say good to meet you since I know you've only met Jim before, not me. Ride was fine. Flatted 2 miles into ride and needed 2 tubes before we got back on the road. Always a little slow going with Ethan - stops are long winded. At least we no longer have to stop at every playground. The burritos were gone when we got done - as were the burgers and hot dogs. Jimmy took advantage of the beer - and we waited a bit for more food to appear. Liked the T's this year. Didn't miss any turns - but it required a lot of vigilance. Saw Barry and "the mother of his children" at the end of the ride. Great turn-out!

I remember that building before it was renovated. Back in the 80's when I first started brewing I saw it and dreamed about making into a microbrew pub. Ah the dreams of the young. The city had a hand in renovating it. I remember the Mayor at the ribbon cutting ceremony a year or 2 ago. It made the mid-Atlantic Brew-news publication.

Harry, glad you liked the the American Brewery building, one of the new things on the route this year.
Ellen, the "mother of my children" thing I though sounds better then my X. She's lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise via utility bike riding and I thought she might enjoy a recreational ride like this.

YaWn! Errr...! I spent way too much time setting up my new phone last night. Most of the time was spent getting to know where the menu items are, but I'm restored to nearly where I was before I lost my last phone.
I really like the phone number backup/restore that Verizon offers. It really saved me a lot of time restoring phone numbers -and- apps.

I think the Harpoon ride has a minimum mph as well. But it has beer which is a great incentive-next year?
I should be at the beach but my son's team is in LL playoffs tonight, even in rain apparently, so here I am. Took them to Hershey last night, camped, ate like a real American, and am in desperate need of long miles. sigh.

I think this ride is a bit shorter- sez that it's about 149 miles/7800' at 16mph. I probably made that comment about that 200 miler to Point Lookout from DC. That thing was like 18-20. Still, the Harpoon ride is hilly and quicker than I ride when in beer mode. Unless, of course, there's limited quantities.
You riding either Flatlands or Chesapeake Beach this weekend? My ride's got an 80 mile option. Love to get some ride time in with ya Harry.
BTW I've been doing a little networking to the DC Rand peeps. Christa plugged my ride on the list. Might see some southerners coming up for it.

When is your ride...this week or next? This week is fathers day and both of my sisters are out of town thus I am the only one to celebrate fathers day with dad. I have missed many Fathers day but can't this year. Hopefully your ride is next week, that weekend is open.

Sunday is both Father's Day and my wife's birthday so no ride, though I want to do that 200k route someday. I'm going to plan on doing that Flatlands tour-but Janet G wants to do a 20+mph century which I find a bit too much. I would like to go fast but not a forced march.

Comments? I'm attempting to make it a little more scenic, the tradeoff being that I ride further east on Route 40 so that I can go through Delaware City and Port Penn. My problem is that I don't know anything about the Delaware City bridge (approximately 1 mile long) on Rt 9 that crosses the canal. The other bridges that follow look to be of no problem.

I got back about 3 hours ago from a 4-night camping trip to an amusement park in PA (https://www.knoebels.com/) with my sister and my two nieces (8 and almost 7.) When I'm camping alone, I'm pretty much content with my "freeze-dried whatever-in-a-bag" meals, but my sister was horrified when I pulled one of those out the first night. She looooves to fire up the portable grill and roast large hunks of various forms of animal. I probably ate more meat these past few days than I do over 6 weeks . . . I am *so* carnivore'd out!

I'm planning on doing the Flatland Tour, too, but with the weather prediction, I doubt if anyone is going to be doing it at a 20 mph average, especially if the winds keep up. If the roads are still wet, no one is going to want to be just off of another's wheel, not even with fenders.
I won't make this mistake again and my only solace is that I plan on doing a mini tour starting Tuesday where I'll be fully loaded including two of everything. Josh's experience on the CWC pre ride kept going through my head, the idea of calling my wife to the rescue from 65 miles out was not an option. Morning wasted, lesson learned.

Sounds like my Flatlands Tour (the full century) went better than Harry's.
Not much pacelining today--the weather was not conducive to setting speed records anyway.
No one had fenders and it wouldn't have mattered much as hard as it came down. By far, the scariest part was the lightning, especially when we were riding along tree-lines:

Plus... because I rode to and from the ride start at Carroll Park on Washington Blvd downtown (as did the only other two riders to take up the challenge, Bob and Tiffany).
Great ride! Lots of protected riding--protected from the wind (for the most part) and protected from the direct sunlight that finally emerged during the return leg.
Besides me, there were two other riders--Bob (of course since he led the ride) and Tiffany (a triathlete who has or will be moving here from Philly). Tiffany did the Chesapeake Beach ride led by Janet G out of Crofton, MD a few months ago--one that I "bonked" on. I thought I remembered her from that ride, but she didn't remember it until we got into Chesapeake Beach and she recognized the area.
Some of the "highlights" of the ride:
- great scenery along the bay with lots of people visiting the beach area (North Beach, Chesapeake Beach)
- Bob almost got "t-boned" by a deer that leaped out of the woods on to the road missing him by inches. (He's still probably catching his breath from that near collision.)
- I saved a box tortoise from certain death on the road.
Considering the fairly fast century from Chesapeake City Saturday (considering the weather), I felt pretty good. That is, until I got home. Once home, I felt a bit pukey (nauseous) and the chocolate milks that I had during the ride mixed with Gatorade... well, maybe I should skip the description.
NOTE: I could not remove the stops from this ride file, because of problems on the database end at BiM, so the average speed is about 3 MPH slower than what's showing here. The clock keeps ticking away even when we stop. During the longest stops (i.e., breaks and lunch), I was able to suspend the cell phone application, so those stops are accounted for.
