Howdy all. Southern MD...more precisely Piney Point, MD. Anyone going to do our Amish 100?

mdaugherty 08-12-08 09:25 AM

Hey Rob, Since I will be working the Amish 100 in the morning (registration), I plan to ride the metric, as I will not have sufficient time for the full 100. To make up for it, I am riding the Civil War Century on September the 6th so that I get my century ride in for the year. For those looking for info and registration information on the Amish 100, go to http://www.paxvelo.com/amish100.shtm and visit the Pax Velo website.

I'm doing neither. :o I lost my legs sometime in May and haven't found them yet.

Actually, after my ride to OCMD, followed by two big mileage weekends in the heat, I'm pretty much a crispy critter at this point.

Crispy Critter! Oh no. Well, it seems like your mileage is going up quicker than just your commute. You've gotta be putting in something. Fall and cooler temps are coming- your time of year.

If you change your mind, I'm thinking about riding this Indian Head ride. I haven't yet ridden a supported century this year. (10 unsupported so far this year :D) I probably won't ride the seagull. Besides, isn't the BF-famous Don Haller down in that neck o' the woods? Maybe I'd get to see his yellow Nishiki.

If you decide to ride it, I promise to take it easy on you. ;)

[QUOTE=greaterbrown;7263354]If you change your mind, I'm thinking about riding this Indian Head ride./QUOTE]

I rode the Indian Head 100 a few years back, and really enjoyed it. Rolly enough to be interesting but not enough to wear you completely out, lovely scenery, very low traffic (not a ton of bikes, either), very friendly club support. I've been wanting to do it again, but I have something going on at noon that day, so it's not possible this year.

I'm probably going to sign up for the Amish 100, though. I've never ridden that.

Well I did the time trail today, pretty cool first race. tons of people and bikes. I did it in 5:11 @ 9.3mph, I didn't think that was to bad. One guy from BBC past me and beat me by nearly a minute. I'll post pics with results later.

I was thinking if a 12-27 instead of a 11-25 would work better? one extra low gear make that big of a difference?

Was this the Ilchester hill ride? Pics, yes.

joshandlauri 08-16-08 12:58 PM

They start me almost 10 minutes earlier than expected so the wife and the kids were alittle late to take my pic on the hill, heres one of me after the race on the new bike, pic of bike and pic of results.

Sorry 5:16 @ 9.1, still not bad I think.

Great job, Josh.

I'm noticing the incomporable Lukasz in 1st

brandenjs 08-16-08 06:42 PM

That's a pretty big spread of ages in that class. Anywhere from a 20yrs. old to 62yrs. old. Is that normal for a time trial like this? By the way I could'nt help noticing your Exustar shoes. I've got a pair of those and for a lower price shoe I really like them. Good job...

Noracer, saw you on the ba trail @ marley, did you ride from essex?

i don't know if you realized who it was or not, I was out with the wife for 13 miles, got my mom to take the brats, I was going to turn around and show off my new bike,I did yell to the wife but she was so far ahead of me, she never heard me yell so maybe you'll see it next weekend. Hope you had fun!

Josh, yes I saw you and turned around, but you were too far down the hill.

No, I didn't ride to the airport--too fried from this ride yesterday:

That GTR looks awsome!

Good going on the TT and your first race. You did great!

I believe Lucasz (from my team) won the CAT 5 last year, too. If not, he was second.

The big spread on ages can happen in any CAT, which is why riding age group is appealing, except that you could be riding against CAT 2s, 1s, and Pro riders.

does anyone know anything about this? is it still on?

Jones Falls TT

I believe the Jones Falls TT trial registration is closed. It's still a good day to get out and zip back and forth on I-83, with kids or not.

I've only done one race type event this year, the Airforce ride down in Arlington. Great fun, pretty much a TT, do as many laps as you can on a closed course before time's up. Maybe next year I'll be able to fit into my BBC Team jersey and actually race.

Anybody doing the Bay Country Century on the 30th? Also, if anybody is meeting up for the CWC or Indian Head I would be happy to meet and ride with some of you.

+1 A VERY cool thing to be riding on the hwy. Wish they did this every sunday, not just once every 2 years.

Harry, that'd be a big 'yes' for me on the Indian Head. Seems like a very nice mellow ride and I plan on riding it that way. Cheap ($20) registration seems well worth it for being pampered. Precut apples! Hell yeah. (BTW thanx for the mini ride report maxine.)

I'll be leaving from B'more (Hampden). Might have a neighbor and a buddy from work also going with. Probably too many for one vehicle, but we can at least carpool/caravan. I'll PM you my phone/email and we can figure it out.

Anyone else?

joshandlauri 08-18-08 04:45 PM

bad news on the jones falls tt, i'll still go and ride on the jfx anyway.

Hi there- we are not having the time trail race this year- for some reason
we can not seem to change the posting on that site. I apologize for any
confusion- we hope you will come out and bike on the closed JFX anyway
however!

Indian Head

Hey GB,
I'm definitely doing the Indian Head, great ride last year, even after doing some of the CW the day before.

At the first or second rest stop they make these eggmcmuffin style sandwiches, nice treat.

I may be able to steal the minivan from my wife for the day, has a three or four bike hitch on the back.

As for the JFX, I'm marking it on my calendar. May make it a family ride. Cyclovia!

Hey all,

Just got back from a weeks vacation with the family out at Deep Creek Lake. Nice time. I only got in one ride but it was the hardest thing I have ever done. I tested out the Savageman Tri bike course, which I am doing in Sept as a relay. That ride is a ball buster, no joke. Anyone who wants a serious test of their climbing ability, I would highly recommend trying it out.

It was a fun ride tho, and I felt better than I thought. Couldn't sleep the night before so I was out the door at 4am. Rode from our cabin to the start as well, so in all it was 70 miles, and close to 7000 feet of climbing.
Here is the official bikely route

Just posted in the DC thread, but this one looks a little more active.

I'm a new rider located in Montgomery county, in between Rockville and Gaithersburg. I'm still getting used to my bike, so I've been sticking to the MUPs that are pretty widespread in this area. I hear though, that the riding in this area can be fantastic, and I'm guessing people aren't talking about the MUPs when they say this. When I'm ready to get off the paths, what are the best places to start looking to ride, that a novice can deal with?

I'm also interested in finding out about the area's LBSs; I've seen a lot of Performance shops around, so I imagine that there are probably some Mom & Pop type places as well, I just haven't found them.

HC203 08-21-08 08:34 AM

How's the traffic on that ride at Deep Creek, shoulders? Sounds like a good one.

HC203 08-21-08 08:40 AM

Hey WRX,
Maryland definitely has diversity of riding conditions. We,ve been talking about the Indian Head Century down near DC on Sep 7th, pretty gentle ride. See link below. The Oxon Hill site has a pretty good cue sheet of rides down in that area. I'm sure other posters can help you as well. There is also the Civil War Century the day before Indian, less hilly alternates available in addition to the 100. Also a ride I'm doing on Aug 30, Bay Country Century should also be gentle. Seagull Century in October out in Salsbury, flat, sometimes windy, but easy.

Honestly, sucks B@lls. most of the ride is 2 lane roads with no shoulder. While most of the ride (I would say 2/3) there was almost no traffic, the ride through the town of westernport and over savage mountain was not fun. On a weekend maybe ok. But the savage mtn road is a coal road, as there is a major coal mine on the mountain. So I was getting buzzed regularily by these coal trucks (think oversized dump trucks). And those guys don't like to gear down at all. so they would blast by me whether it was safe or not. I actually pulled over a couple times just to be safe.

But yea, most of the rest of the ride was on roads with almost no traffic, so it didnt matter.

THe only other downside was that prolly 80% of the ride there was no cell coverage. Silly me, the only route I had was the garmin course I downloaded to my edge (305) so I had just a bread crumb line to follow. And I stupidly didn't make a map for my wife. I could have wiped out and nobody would have found me. Or even if I had cell coverage there would have been no way to tell my wife where to come get me. Not smart for a solo ride (hindsight 20/20)

But no bad things happened. So it's all good

So many things to consider when you're out there. How do you like that Garmin Edge, do you find it accurate? I have an older Garmin Vista that I strap on the handlebars that is sometimes accurate, sometimes not, believe it's off when there is too much foliage. In Death Valley it was accurate to the foot on a 4000+ climb. The Vista clamp won't fit on the wider handlebars of my Madone. Most of my daily riding is done at Montebello and the mileage is accurate there, no elevation of course.

On busy scary roads-I am more and more conscious of the risks which is why I don't mind doing Montebello every day as opposed to fighting people in a hurry at all costs.

HC203 08-21-08 12:52 PM

Checked out that tri on Utube. That Westerport wall looks bruuuutal!

I have been happy with my garmin. It is an older 305 model (no street mapping) so when i plan out a route and download it i basically just have a breadcrumb trail to follow. Works for me but doesn't help if you need to navigate off the route.

It seems pretty accurate. It has the advantage of having a barometric altimeter as well as GPS for elevation. And I have the speed/cadence sensor so it uses that to balance out the speed from the GPS.

I shouldn't say the traffic was too scary. The big trucks blew past me a lot, but they mostly gave me a wide berth. And traffic was still lighter than riding in my neck of the woods.

I wouldn't know. I could barely WALK up it. And that is in Mtn bike shoes, not duck waddle road shoes.

The best part is that the next section after that, is about 9-10% grade and crusher run gravel. So not only is it steep but you keep spinning out while trying to go. Pedal too fast and you spin out and tip over.

Good challenge tho.

Josh,

I'm heading out to Oregon Ridge for a club ride that starts at 8:30am. They'll be riding up to the PA line north of Prettyboy Reservoir, then cutting through the reservoir on the way back--approximately 4,100ft of climbing. The ride is 51 miles long. The ride can be found on the BBC website here:

http://www.baltobikeclub.org/index.pl/schedulea (it's the 15-17 mph ride, not the 18 mph ride)

You are welcome to come if you want. I can pick you up at the Back River bridge Park & Ride at 7:30am. That'll give us enough time to drive to Oregon Ridge Park and ready ourselves for the ride.

derath 08-22-08 06:10 PM

Sounds like fun. Doing the Reston Century sunday so I am gonna go easy tomorrow.
