NoRacer,
I've got the bbc race jersey, can't wear it until I get the weight down. I do group rides but they rarely set out when convenient for me. Just got back from a particularly harrowing lunch ride, Greenspring Valley Rd. and Charles St. particularly bad. Yes I do want to know what measure you took. I'm going to try these guidelines that I swiped from the Hammer Nutrition site, 20 days on and 20 days off. I had the Bim app but it wouldn't work with my model Blackberry with Verizon. I'm downloading my tracks from my older Garmin Vista, no speed or HR stats, thinking of getting one of those newer handlebar mounted Garmins, when I get some cash. |

Fat and happy over here. :)
When I increase my miles or intensity I always get a little drop in weight. That's my cue for more pizza and  Biking has got to be a tough way to loose pounds. It's just too energy efficient. Swimming and running will take the weight off a whole lot quicker I'm sure. Anyway, the bigger my beer gut is, the better my workout going up hills or keeping up with the 15-17 crowd. Then again, Harry is often touring and I'm sure would appreciate a bit less in the trunk and NoRacer is trying to stay in front of Josh, and that is no small task. |

http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/16980 It's a small (re)start for me considering about 5 years ago I could run 26 miles 385 yards under 4 hours. |
food
I started doing a bit of running a few weeks back and likewise makes a good exercise for fall and winter plus cycling of course.. On food-my toughest obstacle is my wife's cooking, fantastic, usually healthy but the stewed blueberries over vanilla ice cream we had last night was delicious but not a good end to my first of twenty diet days.
Here's what I did today, felt like walking and maybe a bit of running, good to be out of the line of fire for a day. A nice woodsy walk down to Rob Lee park. A bit of running but it feels bad, really bad, but walking felt really good, brisk pace. http://hwcampbell.bimjournals.com |
In case you haven't received the email, the CWC has been postponed until Sunday Sept. 7th. Here's part of the email that went out:
Please realize that there is no solution that will be optimal for everyone ??? So we have done the best we can with the information that is currently available. After much discussion of the CWC committee leadership, and much examination of the weather trends, we have decided that the most prudent decision is to postpone the CWC event until Sunday morning. Though events of this nature rarely cancel due to weather, the current forecast for Saturday is severe enough that we believe it could present a danger to you, our participants and volunteers. By postponing until Sunday, we believe that many of our participants (we hope most of you!) will be able to enjoy the event, though a day later. The weather forecast (this one from Weatherbug.com) seems to have been trending toward a worse weather event rather than a better one, compared to earlier predictions.... Of course there are many things that may affect the event, since we are delaying it: 1. We may have fewer volunteers. Of the 120 volunteers that we had lined up for Saturday, we have heard from 75 of them. We have been fortunate to have had offers of help from additional folks that had NOT volunteered for Saturday. So currently we have 55 confirmed volunteers. We are still attempting to contact the 45 volunteers that we have not yet heard from. We expect that we will have 2/3 of our original compliment of volunteers. 2. We do not have access to our final rest stop, Barlow VFD. This rest stop was 18 miles from the end of the 50, 63, 75, and 100 mile routes. The prior rest stop, Fairfield VFD, is 29 miles fro the end. We believe this is tolerable, and we plan to have SAG vehicles available during that final leg of the ride to provide water and snacks. 3. We are uncertain of our 25-mile rest stop on the 100 mile route. We believe that if all else fails, we will be able to set up in the Gathland Parking lot, if not the pavilion. 4. We are unsure of having as much maintenance support for you on Sunday. We are still looking into this issue, but we believe that most of you are experienced riders that know how to handle "maintenance situations". A Caution for you, our Riders: ===================== Since there is a possible severe weather event on Saturday, you will need to be extra careful for gravel and debris in the roads. This debris, of course, can be a danger, especially on fast descents. Be extra vigilant! The debris also tends to cause more flat tires - carry extra tubes and patches! And be prepared to follow your cue sheet, in case the weather has obliterated any of our markings on the road! |
BTW, a couple of years ago I rode the Bay Country Century the day after hurricane Ernesto - there was so much debris on the road you couldn't easily follow markings. That, plus a very low attendance (it was still raining) made it difficult to find the route, I got off the course a couple of times after I lost the group when I flatted.

Cwc
I received that message about the postponement for CWC. I was planning on doing that and the Indian Head, now I need to decide to do the CWC with limited support, no rest stop last 29, I dehydrate quick, or do the Indian Head. I'm leaning towards Indian Head.
|
I wish everyone safe and fun riding this weekend with all the centuries planned. Share pics.
BTW: Harry, Do whichever ride seems the most fun for you. I've got carpool options to the Indian Head either way. Be great to meet up with another BF regular though. -GB |
I'll be at the CWC Sunday. I think I might step back to the Metric. This will be my 14 year old sons longest ride so I think that might be a good call. Not sure he is ready for the climbing on the Century. If anyone is going look for a blue Quadcab Dodge Dakota with racks on top,the wife is running SAG.I'll be on the classic blue Schwinn LeTour with bar-ends and my son will be on a red Nishiki..Hope to meet some of you there...Jeff

annapolis/arnold here. underdressed noob and enjoying it
|
We'll be there. Although Sunday is far less convenient for me - we're happy to not be in the rain tomorrow.
|
So how about this rain and windo today ha in MD? I wish this storm was not rolling threw wanted a good ride today.

CWC vs Indian Head
I'm probably doing the Indian Head, a gut feeling and I enjoyed it so much last year. I always have to ask myself when making a decision between routes-is it the hills? Are you being a wuss? This is the problem with signing up for an organized ride in advance, though no choice when there is a limit. Anybody here doing Seagull? Amish?, and there's another coming up in Oct out of La Plata. Schuylkill next week I think.
I'll probably take a day off of work and do the CWC on my own later in the fall. Tomorrow is probably going to terribly humid following this rain, just a hunch. |

I'd be in for a CWC fall ride also, Love to play hookie from work and ride it. I didn't sign up for it this year as the wife has school saturdays.
I will be getting in a ride tommorow, try to get early 6am start or so and do another 50+. |
Hope everyone is staying dry. took the crappy day to put the bike on the rack and tear it down, relube etc.

Yeah im at work and the radio is going crazy for high water. All the officers are running around shutting down roads. Hopefully they will get things cleaned up for a ride tomorrow, might be a good way to see the damage from the storm.

my ride today, I got a late start due to being up late last night with a 6 month old that refuses to sleep for more than 2 hours at a time.
heres the link, I tried a different route, back river neck rd was nice almost no cars and lined wth trees. One part toward the end on fait ave according to veloroutes is 30% (for a very short part), mostly 23%, its only .4 miles but it was the toughest .4 miles I've done, the hill climb tt was easier than this was. I've take a pic of the hill one day and post it. Anyone else have some strong wind gusts? I know I could have done better. http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=20897 Todays Total Ride http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=20898 Fait Ave, w/30% climb, .4 miles 1.5 Hours 17.2 avg 36.6 max 25 miles 94 rpm avg cad 830 feet of climbing 2 bottles 1 Chocolate Gel 0 sore knees or legs, woo hoo I can't seem to get over the 17mph avg hour no matter how far or where I go, Only when I draft noracer can I average 35mph for 500 miles. Oh well. Next Sunday AM I'll be shooting for a longer, earlier ride, really want to make it to PA and back for my first century. |
This afternoons ride was a short one cause I have a soccer game tonight. Anyway it was a good short ride and a relaxing one at that.
Distance: 20.2 miles Time: 1:09 minutes Average Speed: 18.9 mph Max: 39.3 mph Total Climb: 893 ft. Route: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/197242 Their was a decent head wind from the North West at about 9mph during most of the ride. Stopped at a Orchard to take a quick water break and grab 2 apples. Found out I left the $3 I wanted to bring on the kitchen table so I was kinda bummed. Looking forward to having that dam apple when I got their ha. Anyway way back got the wind behind me and flew home and only used half a water bottle the whole ride which was good. |
Took a short ride today, but it did include a 9-10% climb with an extra 90lbs (2 kids + trailer)
-D |
Derath, Wow climbing and a trailer, that had to be brutal. I can finally put both my kids in the trailer but I'll steer clear of big hills.
As promised here the pic of the hill I did from the bottom to the peak, as you can tell its pretty steep. Short but still steep. Maybe one day noracer can confirm the 23-30% veloroutes says it is. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...i/IMG_8805.jpg |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...i/IMG_8805.jpg EDIT: Yup, that's the one--after seeing Josh's map. I was in there at least once--years back when I was dating a pole-dancer... ummm, I meant exotic dancer. :innocent: She lived in the area... well, off of O'Donnell St. |

Of course my mtn bike/kid hauler is geared much lower than my roadie, which I am sure is a factor (maybe offset by the extra 90lbs). Could also be that the same hill was the last climb after 50 miles on labor day. The other funny thing is that my wife started a good 400-500 feet ahead of me and I smoked her to the top. I thought I was going to have to remind her that kids were present.:D To be honest though, it wasn't on purpose. YOu just can't slow down too much with a trailer. It is near impossible to get started again on a hill like that. [edit] I would love to see that hill. Honestly I am skeptical of the grade. Not that I don't believe you. It is just that I know from previewing the savageman triathlon route what that grade feels like. There is a section called the "westernport wall" that for the block averages 25% and maxes out at 31%. It has also been closed for decades due to being too steep. -D |

By the way, I saw you at 9:30am coming on to Eastern Ave from Merritt Blvd. I was in my truck heading toward Eastpoint on my way to I-695 driving to Sawmill Creek Park by BWI to ride from there to Thomas Point Park south of Annapolis. |
