You're right! It might be time to take it a little easier and ride the Anne Arundel County rides on the B&A.

Still... I need to see what's up with Chuck and Crista, first.

I should probably get back on the DC Rand mailing list. I was never able to get out on their rides, too long, too much time. There was also a lot of banter back and forth before the Shenandoah 1200, some sort of division. I may do the 200k brevet out of Woodbine in December.

Did you do this ride on the fixie? What was your starting point? Looks like a good ride.

It was a nice ride. I had to go to an AM meeting up in Owings Mills at the future location of our frame shop.
Threw the Trek in the car and headed a bit west from there to just past lake Liberty on rt.26. Ate breakfast at a bagel place, stared at my bike map for a while making up a general route and took off, leaving the car in the lot.

Lot of nice roads I'd never been on. Saw incredible tree colors, llamas, a field of bison. Fun too, riding the 10 or so miles on the NCR trail. On the trail, I passed a guy on some sort of high performance cart being pulled by 4 huskies. Awesome.

BTW there is a 200K route I've been working on heading fr. B'more down to Ches. Beach. Currently, I've been cross checking it with Janet's recent BBC ride to change or confirm my route. Might try that in Dec if you're interested. <4000 feet of climb. here's the current version: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/181989

I may be interested. Have you been on that Rt.2 bridge, Solomons Island Rd? Is that the really steep bridge with no shoulder and hi speed traffic. Not sure if that's the one.

You almost rode a century. Now you will have to ride it during a colder Nov!!!

Make sure someone proofs your route:D

I had heard some nasty things about one of the bridges as Harry said. There are 2, Riva rd and Solomons Isl.

I've been over Solomons Island bridge from the south and it wasn't a prob. However, that interchange just north of the bridge does look hairy. It can get re-routed. I'll work on the route a bit tonight. Seems like it could be nice Dec. ride.

On another note; what's up with riding an official brevet with the DC Rand? Are you allowed to just ride along with them? Do you need to be a RUSA member with a brevet card?

Since the riders are suppose to be completely self-sufficient, I can't see that it would be a problem, but I'd check with Crista, jic.

Ill be in town Saturday guy's. Any rides planned....weather permitting?

balto charlie 11-05-08 09:27 PM

GB: here's the battery info I promised. You'll need 2700 mAh NiMH rechargeable AA
batteries and charger http://tinyurl.com/5dsj4u
batteries http://www.thomas-distributing.com/m..._batteries.php
I use the PowerX type and they are good. Guaranteed for 5 years BUT mine are showing signs of lower output after 1 year but I run them everyday from October through April, charging everyday.

Welcome!
For local rides, you might try the BBC:

GB-I did one of their brevets in the spring but bailed due to heavy rain, of course they kept going, hard core. I think my alternate route ended up with more miles and elevation.

Anyway, I just showed up, paid the $10 fee to join DCR. I think that's a one time fee, or yearly fee. They give you a brevet card which you have signed at checkpoints.

I should do your century ride for December, try and get my mileage to at least 5500 by end of year.

If you plan on doing a 1200k, I think you need to do a succession of progressively longer brevets, 200,300,400,600. Something like that.

I was looking at the Catonsville ride.

"all pace long - 9:30 am - 57 mi - Mike Harris 410-312-7884
START: Catonsville Sam's Bagels
New ride to familiar places via new route. Lunch at Ledos in Fulton. Mellow ride that's moderately hilly following streams, rivers and the reservoir with plenty of rest/water stops along the way. We'll ride by the Historic Savage Mill and ascend to the old mill town of Oella."

Anyone else here doing this ride?

Not sure if I am reading this correctly but the Solomons Island Bridge will not be part of the route you showed in a previous post. That bridge is further south of Chesapeake Beach. And also you are so correct that the interchange north of the bridge is hairy.
Not too sure I would want to ride over the bridge though, I do not like to drive across it!

I think you're right. I attempted to cross a bridge down there whilst on Cycle Across MD a few years back. That's the one, near St. Mary's City. It wasn't on the route. We got a bout twenty yards onto the bridge and turned around. It's incredibly steep and long, no shoulder, and you're right up against concrete barriers. Scary. So GB it ain't your bridge that I was thinkin' of.

gary,

FYI-
Mike Harris placed a message on the club's listserv about not being able to lead that ride due to a death in the family--he needs to be a pallbearer for his aunt's funeral in Cleveland. He asked for someone else to lead the ride, but I haven't read that anyone has stepped up.

My feeling is that the ride will not be cancelled for that reason--that if nothing is posted on the listserv, it's because they contacted Mike off-line about accepting the duty.

I usually ride with the DC Randonneurs on the weekends, but I haven't seen a notification about their weekend century rides (they have one on Saturday and another on Sunday), yet, so I'm not committing to any ride just yet.

gary, according to the latest BBC listserv email, the ride starting at Catonsville Sam's Bagels is on.

FYI - 9:30am is rollout time, not arrival time, so get there about 20-30 minutes earlier to introduce yourself, sign the disclaimer, and pick up a cue sheet. There's usually a short meeting by the ride leader with the other riders to remind them about safety and to cover any problem areas that may have popped up on the route after being scheduled.

Have fun; stay safe.
