9-speed compatable crank question

Can I run a 8-speed chain and derallieur on a crank designed for a 9-speed chain?

Front derailleurs and cranks are just about always compatible with both 8/9 speed.

The rear derailleur is not compatible with both. You cannot use an 8 speed chain on a 9 speed derailleur.

Applesauce. It's only the cassette that cares what chain you run.
