I have a hardtail Stumpjumper I ride mostly when weather is not good for a road ride. I try to ride every day during my lunch break and on weekends. Since I'm usually riding when conditions aren't great, mud is an issue, and I don't like going back to work with a soaked back/butt for obvious reasons.

What are the best mudguards for me? Is there anything that will work on a hardtail MTB that provides as much coverage as full fenders on a road bike? And is there something easy to clip on in the front that will provide some protection? I can't go with a fixed mudguard there because my bike rides on a fork mount in the back of my CRV, with the bike fork up against the back seat.

"Best" is a value judgement for you..

I have found SKS mudguards OK, for my several bikes..

quite Adequate.. in fact but I'm not doing single track.

there are spray mudguards with a lot of clearance. so are partial ..

and more complete, full mudguards more for street and gravel road riding..

FWIW the bike is aluminum, 27.5" tires.

Spray in the front is less of an issue than my backside and the drivetrain getting drenched in mud.

the mud on the drive train, may just need you to take the effort to wash it off when you come home..

there are chain-guards , but they are more for commuter/utility bikes..
