1.9 inch tires

hey all, I've been surfing this site a long time for info, and I finally decided to make an account.

I just got a used oryx gemsbok 250 a bit over a month ago. It's riding great so far. The only thing I am wondering about is if the tires are too thin. They're 1.9 inches. The lack of grip is only noticable on really steep climbs. How much would it cost to upgrade, and would it be worth it?

Cost of upgrading tires only depends on how much your new tires are going to be. You could go to like a 2.3 or 2.5.

Cost is the cost of replacement tires.
Personally I like 1.9 in the rear and 2.1 in the front.

Are you sure it is the width of the tires that is the problem? Have you tried different air pressures? I currently have kenda Karma 2.0 tires on my bike, and I like them. There are times that they slip, but that is usually because I either have too much pressure for the conditions, or I am climbing up a particularly rocky rooty section on my single speed (grunt) and I am too far off the front. The onther rsingle speeder I ride with runs 1.9 Maxxis ignitors and he has very few problems with the tires breaking loose.

People could be more specific about recommendations with more specifics about the kind of terrain you are riding.

To answer your question, swapping tires is a reasonable expense ($25-$100) that can totally change the quality of your ride (for better or worse). How is that for ambiguous.

Happy riding

GF

I ride UST tires on my mtbs, the single speed has Maxxis Ignitors 1.9s and the geared has Hutchinson Spiders 2.1s. Personally, I love the Ignitors; they perform very well on the terrain that I ride with the ocassional slip here and there. For fatter tires I like WTBs, I have a set of Mutanoraptor 2.4s (non UST) and like them for fast, hardpacked trails.

If you think that 1.9 are too thin for the riding that you do change to 2.3 in the front and 2.1 on the rear and let us know how it went. Regukar tubes should work unless you go bigger than 2.3.
