If you want it to last 10 years with no major part replacements, it'd probably be a good idea to have a singlespeed, less stuff to wear out and need to be replaced...

Ten years? You need to be looking at a rigid steel bike. Anything else and you'll run into part replacement and compatibility issues down the line. Suspension forks (just as an example) have increased their travel to double and triple what they originally came with. Headsets went from 1" to 1 1/8" and braking technology has run from centerpull cantilevers to disc brakes. Basically the simpler the bike you start with the easier keeping it running will be.
