Who here has been on an epic ride and ended up getting lost in the woods? How did you find your way back?

A few weeks ago Me and a friend decided to explore some trails we hadn't ridden yet. We figured that they would connect with the main trail a couple of miles down. Well, 14 miles later and out of food and water we still had no idea where the main trail was. To make matters worse, the trail became unrideable so we had to carry our bikes. Finally, after being lost for 3 hours we found the main trail. 7 hours later, we finally made it back to the car completely exhausted. All I know is that everytime I think back to that day, it brings a smile to my face. It was a great day.

Before I go, I always try to get a hold of a trail map or a topo map, even if all of the trails aren't on it. If I can't do this, I'll look at a regular road map. This way I get oriented and get an idea where everything is in case I get lost. Also, keep an eye on where the sun is when you enter the trail. In the western hemi. the sun rises in the east, sweeps through the south, and sets in the west. It can help you head in the right direction. Especially if you have a topo map and can identify landmarks. Streams and rivers are a big help to.

Always stash a lighter in your camel back/toolbag. If you get caught after dark (I haven't yet), at least you can stay warm.

Exploring is great, you can discover some great new riding that way. Getting lost is fun only when you've gotten back!!

edit: corrected "I" to "eye" - boy, that was embarrassing!

When i`m going to ride a unknown track or route, i take the following things with me;

* At least 2 ltr. water/depending on the length and difficulty of the track.
* Map(s)
*Small med. kit inc. lighter
*Basic tools (Hex wrench,screwdriver)
*Tube repair kit + spare tube
*Food (bars,bananas e.o.)

I found that stopping and tracing your ride works best. Or go in one direction that you know has civilization. I got lost once (actually im lost all the time but thats another story), just started heading south and kept an idea of how far east or west i was traveling and found my way back.
