Death Ride
My wife and I went out to ride Jumpingpound Ridge & Cox Hill [~37 km & 3500' elevation gain]. We got to the top of Jumpingpound Mountain and got lost from there. I hadn't done the ride since '97, and she had never been on it, so when I said "Hey, that looks like a trail!" She was none the wiser. We ended up riding 48 km and picking up around 2000 extra feet of climbing. We're going for slurpees, then to get drunk.

Three of us rode Prairie View and Jewell on Thursday evening. It's a 20km ride with mostly midl climbing then a steep stretch then a section that would probably qualify as rock climbing. In terms of ride time, we did pretty well but drivetrain problems on Foreverzero's bike combined with a busted derailleur on my bike made for a longer overall ride. I broke my derailleur getting too aggressive around some of the rocks on the descent but I still had a few workable gears. All I can say is thank goodness for a local bike shop's current sale...I picked up two new X-9 derailleurs for $60 Canadian/ea.
Anyway...the pictures...I made them smaller so hopefully they don't bog down the thread. The climb was steep right at the end but the views are worth it...so is the descent!: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...l/IMGP3377.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...l/IMGP3378.JPG The start of the loose rocky descent: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...l/IMGP3380.JPG A while into the descent...along a section where it flattens out and gets smoother: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...l/IMGP3384.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...l/IMGP3389.JPG A pretty cool action shot of Ryan...I planned for the picture to look like that...honest!: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...l/IMGP3396.JPG |

Another update for a ride last weekend...my wife and I were camping in Banff and we found some trails that led from our campsite. We decided to go exploring...we were out for a few hours and did around 30kms. Plus Simon got to swim in Cascade Pond, Johnson Lake, and Two Jack Lake. All we saw on the trails were two other bikers and two people on horses. Jo-Ann and Simon ready to leave the campsite: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3256.JPG Start of the singletrack, just after a switchback descent from the campground and just before Lower Bankhead: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3206.JPG One of the old trains used to haul coal in Bankhead: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3211.JPG Got to love mountain scenery: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3216.JPG Singletrack after Lower Bankhead: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3225.JPG Holy, an actual picture of me!: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3265.JPG A little more twisty singletrack near Cascade Pond: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3269.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3270.JPG Riding to Cascade Pond: http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3271.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/johartman/ima...k/IMGP3273.JPG |

Um never, I was hoping for a closeup of your wife so I can see what kind of bike she has.

2 friends and I went out to our local trail system in hopes of finding "Mickey Mouse", a technical trail, one of the favorites of the area. Last attempt we made to find it, we're pretty sure we made a wrong turn and ended up hiking up the mountain for about an hour, to find out the trail just ends...
So this time, we were pretty sure where to turn. We're about a mile from the turn off to the climb up to Mickey Mouse when my friends chain snaps. So we start heading back, get about 2 miles back, and borrowed a chain breaker from another biker, and ended up just heading back to the car. We ended up hanging out at a rope swing under a bridge that bridges the river right next to the trail. Next time we attempt to find the trail, we're bringing an arsenal of tools :) |

Today me 'n cuzin Jebber loaded up the bikes in the Truck and burned up $40 in gas to go for out for an a couple hours of total fun, we were playing around on the motorcycle park when some gassers come over, when they found that we could follow them any where they left.
We had fun, Central Utah. |
Hit Silver Mtn. (Kellogg, ID) Sunday for some gravity fun. Son was home from Bellingham, so we got in our first 'together' ride of the summer. Mechanicals kinda boogered the day: son blew the 5th Element on his Bullit, so he had no rebound dampening; and I was fighting my new chain guide until a chunk of cardboard and some duct tape saved the day.
In the afternoon, they had their every-other-week grssroots DH race. This one was a short under-3-minute one down one of my favorite trails - - Jackass. Fun, flowy turns and lots of woods. There were only three of us Experts that day, but I managed second against a couple 20-somethings, so I felt good. Wish my son and I could hve done more runs of the whole mountain together. Here's a pict a friend took of me near the top: http://www.aimcomm.com/users/dminor/...silver_web.jpg |
Skipped out of work and broke Girlscout and Hambone out of school early and got a great ride in Pisgah today. N2bikeN is down on vacation from Iowa so we hooked up with him as well. The climb was about 6 miles that led to some great downhill. Great time Here are a few pics.

My ride today was brought to you by the following:
Rocks, rocks, and more rocks, with a generous contribution from roots and viewers like you. Place: Round Valley Trails hit: Upper and Lower Cushetunk. Distance today: 20 miles. Trail Conditions, dusty hardpack. No idea on average speed. Time: 5 hours. 2 flats. Really easy to get the legs burning through this trail when riding a hardtail. Now for some pics, I appologize in advance for the bad lighting. All the pics are from Lower Cushetunk, aka one big frikken rock garden. The pics are from tamer sections where it was safe to stop, there are some big rocks on this trail that can produce some dangerous situations. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2462.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2463.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2464.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2465.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2466.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2467.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2468.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...4/HPIM2469.jpg |
