it's a new (to me) spot that i was shown a couple days back on a night ride. the place kicks ass. a couple fast and flowy sections, and some really chunky rock spots. basically two long popscicle loops laid end to end. some steep and stiff tough technical climbing involved on the stems, which you then get to go back down on the way out. excellent. one trail about a mile long is full of slow speed trialsy sections linked up by narrow, twisty smooth stuff. some drops, a couple cool rollers. a couple sections that didn't go clean for me the other night went down smooth this afternoon. a few other spots are for sure going to need some session time to get the lines clean. multiple rocky line choices on lots of sections.

going back monday to explore a few more side trails. :thumb:

I got out with the Hambone for a good long ride in cold(40f) drizzle. Good time......'cept for the river crossing.

Just a bit past here is where you pull off to go park.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_0001.jpg
Standard east coast chunky rocks in between fast, flowy, tight singletrack.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...IMG_0025-1.jpg
This place has tons of rollers and drops, all shapes and sizes.

Mini-hop off one slab onto another.

Another blurry drop. Left the camera on "auto" as my batteries were on the way out - didn't want to kill them messing around with manual settings.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f1...8/IMG_0047.jpg
And yes, getting up and over that first one is actually pretty mellow.

Nice was able to get out today and got some trail time in today. More of the same tomorrow.

I got out for some "mud time" on the crapper. That thing actually handles really well. As soon as that 2" taller rigid fork is on there, it should be perfect! (the 57y.o. that I rode with fell 4 times in the first 1/2hr)
Good ride though.

Nice Knickerbockers, Scrub;)

Shants/knickers/manpris + knee/shin armour = nice and warm, but not too hot when temps are in the 30-40F range.

:D

And hey, they're just plain comfy.

not really. i'm really, really liking it though. even though the wheelbase is quite a bit longer than i'm used to, it's still super easy to throw the bike around underneath me. i'm attributing that to it's low COG and the short stays. kick-ass fun bike. my single pivot frames didn't pedal poorly, but this pedals better. stays hooked up better while climbing and in the turns, with basically the same shock setup front and rear as my old stuff. the thing is nice and stiff - goes right where i line pick, but has no trouble steamrolling right through chundery stuff if i pick a bad line, either. nice. light, slack, tough enough for me. the reality is that i don't do huge enough stuff to need a full on dh or freeride rig, just something to stand up to the daily abuse of where i ride. digging having a slack bike without resorting to larger travel, a beefier frame, and being able to have that slackness with my bars at the same height as my seat - no chopper driver on this one. climbs very well, especially techy climbs. well, for a 6" travel 32# or so bike.

it's all done. ~32# i think, though i've not had it on an accurate scale.

the totem lowered to 160mm is the shiznit. super stiff. the whole bike is low, long, and still nice and slack like i prefer. rp23 is nice and dialed in. 2.6" kinetics front and rear, the rear the DH version. only thing is now i wish i'd spring for the remote version when i bought my gravity dropper post...

The Totem looks like a pair of Sequoia's, hehe.

My fork has stanchion envy.

The original plan was to use another Lyrik Solo Air, like on the hardtail. This Totem came up for sale used from someone I trust quite well to buy something used from for $375 shipped. No way I was going to pass that up. Did an oil change when dropping the travel down, and it feels goooooood!

Then it still gives me the option to up the travel later if I end up going back to a more FR/DH oriented frame. Doubt I will though. If that urge hit, would probably just pick up a stock 7-8" bike on sale or something - I just don't jump/drop/ride lift assisted enough to really need something like that. I'm happier having a "daily driver" bike that can take that sort of thing when I need, but still pedal around my local stuff.

Reality again: I probably will never really be hitting big enough stuff to need more travel than this, hell most of this stuff I do on my hardtail as well - even this bike is overkill for much of my trails. just nice to have on a ride if the urge overcomes me to do something stupid. :thumb:

More shant content for Ed.

Got out for a couple hours today. Not more pics, as I think my rechargeable batteries are tanking. Old NIMHs that have been around along while. time for some Li-on stuff!

ca7erham 12-06-08 04:04 PM

I hit the snowy roads today. I washed on a corner that I took a bit fast (this one was on a small section of single track near my house) and had probably the best crash ever. The bike went down nice and slow and I just slid for a good distance, got up and hopped back on the bike. I got some pics of the bike in the Post your rigs section.

Rode 52km today :)

Rode to my girlfriend's house, spent about an hour with her, then rode home.

ca7erham 12-07-08 05:50 PM

Rode some miles in the snow (My comp pooped out for some reason at around 7, and we rode for another hour or so). Got more footage for a school project. Also got some footage of a sweet crash (staring me). I think I bruised some ribs, and I've got this odd bloody bruise on my upper arm (it looks like a combo road rash, bruise, carpet burn) that I got through 4 layers of shirts, one of which being a sweat shirt. But the crash looks really cool. It should figure that the only time that my front wheel doesnt skid when I hit my front brakes, I endo. Oh, well. Really fun ride, and nothing hurt until a few hours ago.

Have been communting on the old Mt bike from work to where I park my van. The sun is just setting when I pull out of base. Most of my ride is off road and it's not fully dark until I hit the trails in Riverside State Park. Usually this time of year the commute will be anywhere from 18 to 25 miles. Last night I left work with freezing rain and it stopped when I got to the woods. Still a great ride.

This is the crash, only its not as good as I though from this angle. Youtube really kills quality.
