I don't mind riding to the radio towers. I just prefer the "race" part to be either to the bottom of the crack or to the top of it. No further.

Not in the Bay area, I imagine. I would avoid some of the smaller towns around here though.

Thanks for the link - I had no idea Lundergan was still around these parts.

always ask, sometimes it's just grunted version of "you ok" but if it looks like theyre really in distress il stop and ask, offer supplies and do whatever i can to help, this based on my first real problem on a secluded trail when a total stranger gave me his master link and tought me how to use my chain tool...so yeah i always try to help

Small world. Pat's not only an incredibly talented rider and a great guy, but he's a nutcase, as I'm sure you know.

He was almost responsible for us NOT getting into Canada in 2001 due to sucking down too many adult beverages between Seattle and the border and the subsequent secondary inspection that we all ahd to endure thanks to his smart mouth ("yeah, those guys back there are with us Mr. Customs guy!")

It didn't help that they went NC on their rental van (not DOT approved seating):

Alrighty then. Up the fireroad to the top of The Crack then. Ride the whole way on the "fire" road. No hiking up The Crack to get to the top.

What about climbing the Mile instead of the fireroad to the junction?

Your losing me here. The fireroad to the bottom of the crack Ive been calling the crossroads. Then you can either go up the crack, or down and around then up that pretty damn steep tan dusty road to the top of the crack. After that, there is the trail to the radio towers.

Drunken Chicken 02-25-06 06:21 AM

I always stop if I see someone who's stranded, I generally end up giving out either a tube or lending them my multitool (I'm not much good at mechanics, they're generally better than me ;)) if they're in need of something. I know how useful it is if someone stops and helps you, once I was trying to fix my friends rear brake and I struggled for 15 minutes, then this hiker came along and helped us fix the brake, I was so grateful to him.

Arom 02-25-06 07:54 AM

oh and my 2 cents about the ride are do it, obivously this man has alot of experience and im sure we all could learn a thing or two from him so yeah, some of the vids on his site look pretty sick, im personally trying to improve my technique right now and i saw a few things in the videos to practice go for it

gmoneyhobbit 02-25-06 09:39 AM

Follow the green (boring fireroad) from Higgins to the top of the Crack. Hiking up the Crack (in red) is verbotten. Climbing The Mile (yellow) is still on the table.

It's really not that complicated...

To prove its not about the bike, you guys should switch bikes for the race.

That assumes that we are the same height with the same limb length.

This is someone's chance to prove that they will "own" anyone on a climb if that person laughs at their goofy bar ends that are pointed skyward, among other things.

mcoine 02-25-06 09:25 PM

yeah I know, don't get me wrong, his bars are goofy, and he isn't going to win. I thought the point here was that the "crack" can't be done on a hard tail. So you (hank or pete or whatever) should just ride a rigid bike then. Personally, I've ridden similar places on a rigid, and I actually like the precise control they offer.

EJ123 02-25-06 09:44 PM

I would if i had the materials or hand them a cell phone if theyre a kid or something.

I had a flat and was about 2 miles from home. so I was like oh crap! I didnt have my cell nor anything. So it was getting to almost a pinch flat and im riding down this trail by the railroad tracks. And this roadie zooms past me and stops and asks if i needed it fixed. So he takes off the rear tire and checks to see where the hole is. He didnt find it but aired it up so I could make it home. Nice guy.

Just an ambitious mileage goal, and that the foot is almost healed. 25 here.

The silence is deafening. Are we still on for Wednesday at 10:30 am?

Pheard 02-27-06 11:16 AM

I don't know. Need new rim, and I need a new rear tread. Plus after looking at the forecast everyday is going to be rain and windy and overcast. Maybe, maybe not. I don't know.

Indy_Rider 02-27-06 11:21 AM

I always offer because one day I may be the one in need and hope someone repays the favor.

dirtbikedude 02-27-06 11:33 AM

I always stop or slow and ask if assistance is needed. Now if I see the same rider a multiple of times I will ask if they are alright and if they need to strighten a rim or fix something more serious I will help but if they need a tube or patch or air I will not help because they should be prepared for such things especially if it has happend before.

Mm, I'm not getting a reading on my enthusiasmometer. The batteries might be dead ...

What's wrong with a little wind and a chance of rain?

Straight from NOAA:

"Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with rain likely in the north bay and a chance of rain elsewhere. Highs in the upper 50s. Southeast winds 10 to 20 mph increasing to 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts in the afternoon. Chance of rain 50 percent."

Nothing, thats just kind of making it a crummy ride. The problem is the no money for new tread or rim. I don't know if I mentioned my tread having multiple holes in it in the sidewalls. You want me to ride on a bent rim with no tread!!

Don't even act like Im trying to get out of it, my bike is unrideable and the weather is garbage.
