Is it doable though?

Could it stand up to heavy abuse? Take drops? Big jumps? Bad crashes?

Are you talking about internally? Yes they can, on all counts. My buddy rode a roholff for 2 years in whistler/shore riding 4 to 5 days a week. 250 pound guy who did 20 ft drops fairly often. It survived fine.
