I'm what you might call a scrapyard biker. I build my Trek 4500 over six months, mostly with scrap parts. In that time I rode with roadies once, a 60 mile out and back over all roads. In my experiance roadies are pretty friendly, I finished in seventh place out of over 60 road bikes at the halfway point and on the entire ride I had 4-7 road bikes drafting off me. Only one guy would trade off with me. I took my time going back. The bikes in front were Jack Kane and his buddies, they seemed nice too, but they had the most ANNOYING CONCIETED attitude. Plus, none of them thought I could keep up (I showed them).

It was thier attitudes that kept me from riding with them ever again, so don't say it's only Mountain bikers.

I am pretty confident that there are very few people out there that can keep up with me on a mountain bike when I am on a road bike (on the road). The tire resistance plus gearing just make it next to impossible, that is if we are both aware of the race. If I'm not aware of being in a race I'm sure I will "lose" pretty often though.

You don't know if the other rider is on a recovery ride, at the end of a long or intense ride, warming up at the beginning of a ride, just coming back from injury or merely out for a casual ride. It's the same in the gym... I see too many little squirts come in and lift some ridiculously heavy amount of weight to show off and then they're spent. I'd rather have a rounded workout routine... some days are heavy, some days are light. Same thing in biking, some days are intense, some days are for recovery. You want to know if you're faster than someone? Meet them at the next local race. Then you'll know who's faster.

That's exactly right. Right now I am in the MS Phase (by Joe Friel). Doing this I do 3-5 sets of 3-6 reps. During this time I do a good bit of weight. However over the next few months the weight will go down and the reps will go up. Eventually I will be doing a pretty low amount of weight but I'll be doing two sets of 40 reps. In the gym I am only concerned about what one person is doing and that's me.
