Bikes: 2004 Trek 4500

I'm what you might call a scrapyard biker. I build my Trek 4500 over six months, mostly with scrap parts. In that time I rode with roadies once, a 60 mile out and back over all roads. In my experiance roadies are pretty friendly, I finished in seventh place out of over 60 road bikes at the halfway point and on the entire ride I had 4-7 road bikes drafting off me. Only one guy would trade off with me. I took my time going back. The bikes in front were Jack Kane and his buddies, they seemed nice too, but they had the most ANNOYING CONCIETED attitude. Plus, none of them thought I could keep up (I showed them).

It was thier attitudes that kept me from riding with them ever again, so don't say it's only Mountain bikers.

looks like it's time to enter the weird world of recumbents. i've only had experience with one person on a recumbent, but he was a pretty nice fellow.

I always wonder the same thing when I hear statements such as this. I am pretty confident that there are very few people out there that can keep up with me on a mountain bike when I am on a road bike (on the road). The tire resistance plus gearing just make it next to impossible, that is if we are both aware of the race. If I'm not aware of being in a race I'm sure I will "lose" pretty often though.

Agreed. There are too many factors to consider. You don't know if the other rider is on a recovery ride, at the end of a long or intense ride, warming up at the beginning of a ride, just coming back from injury or merely out for a casual ride. It's the same in the gym... I see too many little squirts come in and lift some ridiculously heavy amount of weight to show off and then they're spent. I'd rather have a rounded workout routine... some days are heavy, some days are light. Same thing in biking, some days are intense, some days are for recovery. You want to know if you're faster than someone? Meet them at the next local race. Then you'll know who's faster.

Yeah, but all roadies are on the juice so they should be always ready to race.

If all of the MTB'ers would get off the pot, they could smoke all the rodies that are on all the juice.

That's exactly right. Right now I am in the MS Phase (by Joe Friel). Doing this I do 3-5 sets of 3-6 reps. During this time I do a good bit of weight. However over the next few months the weight will go down and the reps will go up. Eventually I will be doing a pretty low amount of weight but I'll be doing two sets of 40 reps. In the gym I am only concerned about what one person is doing and that's me.

That's the way you have to be. I often talk to others to get ideas on new or different excercises, but as far as what weight you are pushing, you have to know your own limits. Trying to keep up often leads to injury and is counterproductive.

Juice? Nah, I use water when I ride. Oh wait.. THE juice... like in steroids... as in Floyd "the 'roid" Landis. Of course. I gotcha.

My girlfriend tried to wave him down and we both yelled at him for help, but he zoomed past us and screamed obsceneties at us, apparently for our "blocking" his path. This could not have been more stereotypically demonic mountain biker behavior if it had been scripted. The guy was likley in his early 20s, obviously trying hard to cultivate the Jesus or Eddie vedder circa 1992 look. I figure he's unemployed, smokes dope and lives with his parents. That's what I get for leaving the pavement. Damn Sasquatch-looking jerk...I hope he smokes some paraquat-laced weed and ends up in the ICU.

I was happy to see a roadie coming along (I was on my mountain bike)...looking sharper in his tight clothes than any metal hairband guitarist. I asked him for help. He said he could not really be bothered as it was not an emergency and he did not want to ruin his workout. He looked French...I told him he was a jerk. he told me to get a real bike. I hope he chokes on his cheese...

I'm still not sure where you got this pothead idea from. I don't use pot, none of the guys I ride with use pot. I split my time nearly 50/50 between mountain and road. In your book, what does that make me? Elitist trailer trash? Pot smoking juicer? My opinion is the cycling makes me healthier.

Bikes: Lots

The only time I'm on the "pot" is when I'm in a small room, lots of magazines and a foul odor.
