You are bad!

But I used to think it was insane to spend over $20K on a transportation car (Heck I thought it was insanity when they crept over 10K). I remember that in 1971 there were Ford ads that told you that you could down to your local dealer, plunk down 10 grand and order a DeTomaso Pantera. That was a heady amount for a heady piece of machinery.

I remember thinking about how I couldn't believe anyone would pay $1,000 for a bike. It just didn't make sense, not only was a bike not worth it at the time $1,000 was a whole lot of money! Well, things changed. I got more into the sport, rode a couple of nice bikes and found out how nice they felt and rode. I was hooked. Not only that but my financial situation slowly changed as well. I got to the point that I could actually afford to have some nice toys and not take food off of the table. So why not, I work my butt off so why not spend money on things that I enjoy.

My Ti Fat Chance was 2395 frame only in 1999. It was worth it. LowCel, if you're interested in trying to find a Yo Eddy, check out this site https://www.retrobike.co.uk/ These guys have a ton of vintage bikes and a lot of info.

Dollar for dollar, HT is so much better.
That's not an indicator of absolute superiority. Fortunatly, not everyone is on such a limited budget.

This is my first post on Bike Forums in a couple months, I bought a FS bike today for the first time after riding a hardtail bike the last year and a half. The hardtail was working fine until I started doing trails with some friends and found that the 700 size mountain tires and cheap shock weren't cutting it. I like to take big jumps and I'm not light so long travel was important. In the end I tried a stumpjumper FSR and immediately liked it better for jumps and overall smooth feel than the hardtails I've been riding since a kid. After an hour and a half today on trails and streets, it's definitely a step above my old bike but a hardtails would cut it if need be. The rear suspension, which I never really considered before, changes the entire feel of the ride on a dirty trail as well as on the concrete. It's so night-and-day, you have to try each and decide for yourself which works for you. Hardtails definitely have their place, especially on paved roads, it's no question which is better. But if you're throwing 200+ lbs around over tree roots and such, boy does a fox suspension front and rear make you feel like the master of your domain!

What does that make an xc fs (cross country full suspension)?

*edit - Oops, just noticed that pete posted pretty much the exact same question at the end of his post.
