lol Yes. my own private shop, because apparently decent shops dont exist.

My Trek needs everything re-done / replaced and my friends' bikes' housing is all mis matched and crappy. Its also not compression less and is real flimsy and floppy.

My goal is to become almost fully self sustainable when it comes to biking.
Next things on my list is truing stand, dishing tool, and that sort of stuff.

why are truing stands so expensive... They are not that complicated, and its not like their super calibrated or anything like that...

Use a cheap crapped out rigid fork off ebay for 10 bucks. Make your own indexes with clamp-on crap...unless you're a welder.

My uncle has a tool fetish, he buys almost everything that comes out of the Mac Tools catalog His tool box.. is.. massive. and in the whole shop there are 4 nice sized tool boxes fully loaded, and a back room with even more... yay! lol

and my #2 choice.. ill be an hour away lol.

I'm regretting throwing my old suntour fork away. I had to lighten my load for the move, and it got tossed. =(
This week is finals week, and im working 3 out of the 4 days, so after this week I'm going to tackle my restoration project on the trek.

i would love to go ride in this beautiful 70 degree weather we are having right now but my roommates were mowing and aired up the tires to the tractor with my pump and it fell off under the shredder.....bike pump is no longer with us.

I'm well aware of that Dminor. I never claimed to be an expert, I just said I know how. I also stated that it may not be the prettiest but it works. I grew up around 4 uncles who build vehicles, primarily trucks, (show trucks at that.. that actually win car shows, can fix just about anything, builds houses, does roofing, plumbing, wiring, ...
etc.
Trust me, I know there's more. But the way you're talking, you must be an expert, so why not enlighten all of us with some welding knowledge.

on a happier not, In between the crap and hell i've put up wit today, I was able to do some work on my Rim. Got my hands on a T-2 truing stand and a dishing thing. Only problem is they didn't give me the threaded rod that goes in the center of the thing..
Anyway without the dishing, I was able to get the rim almost completely laterally true, and was able to smoothen out the high and low spots. Afterwards I checked the tension, good enough for me, some slightly higher, some a bit lower, but oh well... don't think its going to get much better.... I was almost tempted to buy a new rim last night.

Now my issue is for some magical reason, the rim is to close to the left stays, and the tire rubs... I messed with the axle and stuff and adjusted it over a smidge, Haven't put the tires on yet...

So, no freakin' threaded rod. Improvise something.

Looking for some input:

I found a Turner Burner frame on craigslist, 2004 model, for $475 with a Thomson seatpost, FSA headset, and Manitou Skareb fork. He hasn't ridden it for the last 2 years and it's had light use before that (one of those guys with a bunch of bikes to choose from). Is that price reasonable? It sounds a little high, but I haven't looked for used mountain bikes in a while.

Must be the Thomson seat post :D. Seriously, suspension frame with headset and fork from a 'boutique' maker like Turner - - yeah, $475 is an understandable price.

I used the truing stand to dish the wheel, got it centered between the calipers, worked all the side-to-side movement out, and smoothed out the humps, but they aren't gone.

Cleaned up the cassette, put it all back, Replaced all housing and all cables, new chain. Tomorrow is adjustment and finish up day...
All I need is zip ties...

As far as being resourceful, I didn't want to do something that would jack up his equipment. It just takes a little bit of time for me to look over stuff and suddenly something usually pops in my head. As for as the threaded rod, I don't have anything that would of worked here so I made due without.

it didn't sound too unreasonable. I know mtbikes depreciate pretty quick in general, but I wasn't sure how the higher-end bikes depreciated.

The old infamous Trek has been resurrected!! I put it all back together today, and adjusted the drive train, put on the koolstop pads, and except for a few minor adjustment issues and zip-ties (I don't have any, and the store on base is out) it's rideable again! I took it up and down my road today in the snow, and didn't have many issues. Bike seems like it will be fine in the snow, I was tackling some decent snow piles with no issues.... HT Action!!!

anyway... just thought Y'all would like to know that this nightmare is over.... now I need another project lol.

Since this is my mess around, "I don't care TOO much bike" now I ran full length housing on front a rear brakes, and put some housing between wear the cable goes from the FD to the first cable stop, and such, to keep the roost of it.
Got LX FD and RD... It's no longer dead lol.... for now......
all thats left is to ziptie the cables and stuff, because right now its electrical taped.
