Grips - Oury lock ons
Rd just needs adjustment
Middle ring get a new chainring

And I think you might want a chain.

From what I found out about that, if you don't know, it is a 99. It has an xt/xtr drivetrain, does it still have those?

What you are going to need:
Chain
Chainrings
9speed cassette,
Deraillieur Hanger
You might be able to straighten the rear deraillieur.
Glad the wheels trued up.
Jockey cogs for the deraillieur.

Blue, touchup paint, black touchup paint and whiteout should take care of the scratches.

Grips, I would put something like Salsa Juego De Fuegos on it.

Just a little heads up with that particular model of LX shifter, I would squirt some lightweight oil or alcohol in there, those triggers have a history of having the internals fail if they get dry.

Edit: BCD on cranks is 104mm.

It's a nice bike - if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it?

Thats a good deal. it sold for somewhere around 1200, as seen here:https://bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeS...Comp&Type=bike

Definitely, I would have gotten that. And you might need a new cassette. New chains don't often mesh well with old cassettes. You'll just have to see. If the chain feels funny when pedalling put a new one on (cassette) so you don't wear out the chain early.

I'll try my best to straighten the RD hanger. I have no idea how to do that. Time to use the search function in the mechanics forum, eh? But first, I'll try to adjust the limit screws to see if it'll prevent the RD from flying into the spokes.

Jockey cogs. Are both those little wheels called jockey cogs? I'll probably buy everything online and knowing the formal name of an item is the difference between a good buying experience & a horrible experience.

I paid $200. What do you guys think? Good deal? Did I get robbed?
He should've paid you $200 to take it out of his hands.

Hows that fork? I had the same one that was given to me..
It was way to soft and leaked a bit.

You may consider a new fork as well?

No way. I dig old bikes. This one does have problems but a pretty nice frame. Uh, IMO the chain ring is toast btw.

Sit and wait 5 minutes, ddac. You really are becoming the MTB forum knob.

At least you didn't post this in here like you did elsewhere...you'd have been eaten alive.

I wouldn't have paid 200 for it.

maybe 100, if I really liked older aluminum frames. Which I don't.

Wow excellent vid! Really enjoyed the "talk radio" background noise. The climax was especially entertaining, with you showing the fruits of your labor by hand pedaling the bike on the trainer. Bravo!!!

Okay, I must admit. A smile came over my face when I saw how that the middle chainring worked for you. I didn't think that it was possible to put it back but you certainly proved it!

That was pretty cool. Shows how much you can accomplish with determination. Bravo to you, ddac! I'm actually pretty excited to see how this bike goes through the changes. Please keep posting.

The only thing that got me a tad nervous was: Wear shoes when you work with flame and melting metals!!!!

Good on you, ddac!

Pssst: your new SRAM rear mech is not going to work with the old Shimano shifters. You'll need some SRAM shifters and a cassette to match whichever shifter speed setup you get. (8 or 9 speed)

You're not getting a lot of responses because your post is about a ten your old bike. Yeah, there are likely a great many out there still, but most are not in hardcore or daily driver mtb use at this point. Not particularly rare though. At least it's nothing particularly proprietary about the frame for you to get spare parts to fit.

Well, sort of. SRAM makes its rear mechs meant to work with only their shifters, but they also make a line of their shifters that will work with Shimano rears.

Its Deore level non lx or xt just plain deore. Why not look into doing somthing like this.....

https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/192...-Build-Kit.htm

For 230 bucks you can have all nice new components that work well together and still stay below what the cost of what a new bike would have been.

Yeah im the same i like shimano , not that ones any better than the other its just my opinion. Their kits are tad more exspensive. Ijust showed you the x7 cause i though you were sticking to a buget.

I was running the big ring the other day on the Dawg. Flats, and downhills lol.

I had to try and keep up.

My original plan for the Dawg was to make it a 2x9 or a 1x9...

with the terrain here, and the constant ups and downs, Im thinking I need to keep it a 3x9.
