OK, so you need more proof of my MTB Fredosity do you? Exhibit A:

The new fenders actually worked great today. A few sloppy patches in the woods after recent rains. The bike got muddy, I did not. Easy to take on and off too.

I do all of this for fun. Even the gnarly Road Nazi hammerfests and races. You gotta do what works for you. I am now, and will probably remain, a total and complete MTB Fred.
I've been thinking about the "MTB Fred" thing and have decided that it doesn't exist, at least in my mind. MTBing is really "run what you brung" and "wear what you dare" so there are no real rules to break. We may get a little bent out of shape when someone asks us what they think of a $99 full suspension bike from the local X-mart, but that's more out of safety and durability concerns.

I tend to agree with this sentiment.

You need to get that thing dirty.. and don't clean it for a couple months. Trail zen will increase when you aren't worrying about getting your bike dirty.

That bike is a freaking rolling billboard. Get out the hairdryer and start peeling man.

I will reserve comment on the fendruhs.

Nope. That would violate my BD warranty. Besides, I think Mr. Motobecane would be impressed with this latter day American company/Taiwan sourced resurrected brand name effort. It's a nice bicycle.

Meh. gastro has similar tendencies to keep his bike clean and he can wheelie for meters and meters while drinking a beer. I hope to emulate that one day.

real freds have their bar ends pointing straight up or slightly backwards.

and if you really wanted it, a suspension seatpost would be in order.

Good point, even I won't stoop to a suspension seat post. Do MTB Freds have helmet mirrors so they can check to see if a bear is chasing them?

Bike handling will come in time. I'm just now getting good technical skills, and I've been at it on tougher rides for two years.

One thing that will help - practice doing figure-8s and loops with the smallest radius as possible. Try it with different speeds. Try them on slightly tilted ground, rougher ground, etc. as you get better at it. That will give you much more confidence on the scary stuff like off-camber, rutty switchbacks on steep hills.

Every forum is wrong for you to be in!
But since you have come to the dark side, let the force be with you! Just let go and feel the trail beneath you.
And get ride of those stupid fenders! My god man, there are women and children around here.

I've been riding the Fly Ti in a loop from the front hall to the LR through the kitchen and back. Very tight turns. Late at night. If my wife ever catches me doing this, it's Divorce Court.
