Specialized Mountain Bicycle

Hello, I don't mean to ask pesky questions, but I need some help. I purchased this mountain bike from a garage sale for pretty cheap. I'm new to cycling and I thoroughly enjoy riding it, I just really need a good road/commuting bike for college in the fall (I intend to be without a car ). I'm looking to sell this to purchase a fairly modest entry level road bike. I need to know how much, round about, it is worth. Any ideas?

Looks like a 1999 FSR... https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...=FSR&Type=bike

Nice find for a garage sale...

Depends on the condition, and the market for used bikes in your area, but I'd say $300-400?

The bike is in great condition. The guy i bought it from said the front tire needs to be trued and the front derailuer is pretty out of whack, but not damaged at all. I was hoping to get $4-500 for it.

More pictures:

Personally, I wouldn't be willing to spend too much on that. A lot has changed since the design of that frame.

Yeah, it doesn't look like it was ridden much at all... Doesn't hurt to stick it on craigslist for $500, but it might be a while before you find someone willing to pay that much for it... maybe you could find someone with a road bike to trade for...

Yeah, but the basic suspension design is still being used by them. But you are right as far as money. I would not spend too much for it or on it.....I would however ride the crap out of it

I think I've decided on a Scattante Americano for $349 on Performance bikes. So $400 would be what I need to break even. Does that sound fair to you guys?

Yeah, but ask for a little more so that you can discount it a bit to give the buyer that "I got a good deal" feeling

don't buy the americano. you yourself should be looking for a $300 bike on craigslist. Many better bikes can be had for that money.

I'll be honest, there is really slim pickin's on the Craig's List in my area, and the Americano has the features I want. I'm not super picky, reliability and affordability are my main concerns. I have $0 extra that I can put into a nicer bike. I'll keep my eye out, but right now that one is looking best.

Don't mean to sound like a jerk, but what has changed? You're either implying that this bike isn't up to latest year model trends, which is a ridiculous way to look at things...or you're implying that mountains have changed which renders this design to be obsolete. If it was good bike in 1999, then it's a good bike today.

You're ignorant. And I mean that in a literal way. Go read up on equipment, gather some real life experience, and check back with us.

1:Frame
2: Shock Placement(Several Times)
3: Frame Material
4:The link.
5: Disc Tabs
6: Deraillieur hanger
7:Shock technology(Some models come with the brain shock now.)
8: Pivot Placement

With your statement "If it was a good bike in 1999(which it was), then it's a good bike today was entirely true, then there would still be a major market for bikes with a URT(Unified Rear Triangle.) Where the bb, cranks were on the rear swing arm of the bike, still would have the belief that fork boots were important in keeping dirt and grime out of the seals.

I just think it's crazy how much people obsess over having the latest technology. I might aswell put off buying a new bike for a few years because they will be improved compared to this years model. Why waste my money now? I fully understand the newer bikes have improvements and the improvements make a difference. Therefore, the ignorant comment was not necessary. It just seems crazy to me that the knowledge that something more fashionable and up to date exist would render something that is perfectly fine worthless. Geesh, calm down guys.

Okay then, you're not ignorant, you simply have no clue about how consumer markets work.

$20 more and free shipping, still under $400. The americano doesn't have a higher quality frame or wheels. For real, non-hipster riding gears are your friend. You've obviously been looking around, so get the one with the same top tube length as the americano you want.

OP I understand what you're saying about technology and also what others are saying about consumer driven markets. The right person will pay $400 for that bike (especially since it looks new and apparently there aren't that many used bikes available in your area), they just don't happen to troll the forum. It's nicer than any dept store FS that costs $200, by far. Not quite as light, but every bit as nice as the $400 entry hardtails, but with the advantage of being FS which tends to appeal to the uninformed

I would have to disagree. I was just surprised to see BICYCLISTS caught up in such a crazed consumer frenzy.

Either way, thanks for the help. Having ridden the bike quite a bit, I believe $400, while a little on the low side of what I was hoping, is a fair asking price. It's very enjoyable to ride.

I would really prefer a single speed. I'm not really into the hipster skidding fixed gear stuff (though it looks like fun). I've been riding various mountain bikes on the road for the last year or so and I have NEVER needed to switch out of the lowest gear. And yes, I've dealt with hills. I'm young and healthy and enjoy the challenge. I hate having to deal with all the fuss of gears and stuff. I really appreciate simplicity.

Any other suggestions? What about the one you listed makes it better exactly? How much does it cost to get rid of all the gears and derailleurs and put on a single freewheel? How does the Americano compare to a Motobecane Messenger or one those no-name Single Speed Track bikes posted all over eBay?

stay away from the road forum.
After researching bikes, I could probably have guessed this

I'm sure you'll be happy with the Performance Bike, if what you want is only one gear and the simplicity and the zen and whatnot..........

The one I listed is better for most people because it has gears. If you don't need them, then it's not better.

btw, for $20 you can convert it to SS using the Forte chain tensioner thing, but that would be pointless, wouldn't it?
