9 speed upgrade

I'm upgrading my 8 speed up to a 9 speed and i have a couple of cassetes lying around. I have a Shimano HG one that goes from 13-23 and i have an XT level cassette that goes from 11-32. I don't much much about the gear sizes, but I plan on using this bike for XC. Which cassette should I use?

Well typically the 13-23 would be an oddball road cassette. I'd use the 11-32 as that's a more common choice that would work under most conditions

Yep, the 13-23 sounds like a touring cassette, the 11-32 is pretty standard for mtn bikes.

A race cassette would be something like an 11-28. The 23 seems awfully hard.
