I am from Canada and I like the sound of these prices.
I have to convert them though
Do you think that a larger city will have better prices of bikes or are they the same accross the country??

Just to compare, I paid $800 Cdn for my 04 Kona Blast (leftover model), which I think is around $500 US. From what I've seen, the prices in the States are higher than what we're paying here, after you do the conversion.

I took the Gary Fisher Tassajara for a test ride and loved it, however it is over my budget. The Gary Fisher Marlin looks like it is the same frame but with a few different part, looks like mainly brakes and gears. How big are these differences? Are the bikes going to be the same weight if the frames are the same?
I don't want to spend the extra cash if the Tassajara is for riding I wont do.
I mainly ride in the city and the odd single track trail nothing too major, although I do ride pretty hard.
Here is a side by side bike comparison chart.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help....

Today my Local Bike Store was having a sale and I picked up a '05 Rockhopper for $470. I am very pleased with my purchase. I spent a lot of time lurking around these forums reading this thread in particular. It was a great help, and I wanted to say thanks to Raiyn and the others that answered questions for their insight and keeping the thread alive and updated.

I also picked up a brand new '05 Rockhopper from my LBS 2 weeks ago. Couldn't be any happier either. Bike has been great so far. Got a great deal from Bell's Bike Shop in North Miami Beach $399.99 + tax. Bought their last 19'' yellow frame. Salesperson told me they would not be ordering anymore 2005’s Specializeds, because the 2006’s would be out in about 2 months.

i have a trek 4500 and am ready to start making upgrades. everything is currently stock and i think the first and best move would be a new rear derialler. I was looking at the xt and xtr, i like those better than the grip shifts of sram. any other recommendations for upgrading the bike? i was a smooth ride. also i was looking at changing from my matrix 750 rims and was also going to grab some continental travelcontancts for commute days. just trying to get some feedback on several different things. (oh and it is a 24" frame,i'm 6'8" 250)and was wondering if the upgrade to disc brakes was worth the money

I bought a 2006 Specialized Hardrock Sport today at my local Bike shop here in New Orleans and it ran like 395.00 tax and all.

Cool -- Tx Mech and Wrinkle. $290 is a great price, no? Where did you order from? I thought $440 was a decent price, but maybe I should set the bar lower since it is a '04?
I rode it today and really liked it as well. It will be XC plus some commuting (perhaps with a set of slicks), and it seems versatile enough to do both (at least until I can afford a separate road bike). I'm a total novice, so I suspect anything will be fine, but in comparison to eithers I've tested, the '04 Marin HH seems like a good ride at a very solid price. Mech, I think you are right on weight - a tad under 30 lbs. I believe....

I hope you're a taller rider.
I bought the bike from Sierra Trading Post about a month back. Since then the price has gone up, but they occasionally send out coupons through email. They had a 20% off coupon that expired recently. This bike was previously listed for $230, plus a 10% coupon when I purchased it, PLUS I got free shipping!
The only size they have left is 18.5 however, so unless you're about 5'10 and up, I woulnd't recommend it.
Either way, you won't regret this bike. It has an overall slickness to it, which I preferred over the trek and specialized, and since I got it for such a good deal, I upgraded it with Avid brakes which made it even better.
