Is GIANT YUKON any good?
 

Hey guys, just wanna know if GIANT YUKON is any good? thinking of buying one, and i want to know if there is any problems that can occur with the bike?

No picture attached, but the bike is generally ok.

I would recommend looking at the Trek 4500 or Kona Blast though which are better bikes.

Only things I don't like on the bike is the fork and the Hayes mech. discs. IMO Avid BB7s are the ONLY mech discs you should get. The fork is a low-end fork, won't stand up to alot of abuse but it will work for light trail riding and riding on streets.

how much are you considering paying for the giant yukon? and where are you buying it from?

First of all thanks for all the information, I’ve been through all the pages in this topic a couple of times and I now feel much more educated on buying my first mountain bike.

There is a mapped roadcourse route that passed the front of my house and a nice beginner to intermediate MTB trail about 15 minutes from my house. The trail surrounds the lake and should have some nice views. I’m looking forward into getting into the sport.

I have a budget of $500 out the door and visited my first LBS in my area yesterday. They showed me the Rockhopper, 4500 and Gary Fisher Marlin. The Marlin did not feel as good to me as the 4500 and they did not have a Rockhopper in my size (17-18). So I’ve ruled out the Marlin (ugly green).

I would told I would get free beginner courses, two tune ups a year and 15% off any accessories at my purchase. I was quoted $489 or $499 for each of the three bikes. Is this a good price? I was hopping to have enough left to buy a helmet, few tools and a basic computer. They do not have any 04 models left so everything is a 05.

I was also seriously considering the Motobecane 600HT for $400 on ebay…

yeah I was just going to ask about the motobecane 500ht sounds like a good deal, but I am a beginner too, to anyone who knows, is this a good bike?

Buying it from a store called, 'The Bike Superstore', the bike itself costs $699. might get it cheaper if i pay cash.

Hardrock vs Rockhopper
 

is there that much of a difference between the two? can a newbie like me notice the difference? is it worth the extra money to get a Rockhopper?

Which two are you comparing? It depends on the models because they have different components. In general, I would say go with the Rockhopper if you are looking at a Comp or Pro model. You may not notice the difference for the first few months of riding, but you will after you have some experience.

Well, generally speaking, the Rockhopper frame is more XC and trail oriented but not by much while the HardRock is a little less nimble given its slightly longer wheelbase. Other than that, it's down to components and the RockHopper line is spec'ed higher.

i was thinking the most basic model they had for each.. is it worth that few 100$ more?

as a new rider i would recomend the hard rock, because its more of an alaround bike, so you can dial in your style, and the kind of riding you want to do , so when your ready you can buy an more expensive bike that is specific to the kind of riding you want to do.

How much are you paying for both of them? The 500DS looks to be a terrible bike, especially compared to the 500HT which is a decent bike with some questionable parts.

Of course it depends how much you're paying.

Rockhopper is a bit lighter I think is more cross country based while the hardrock is all around.

For 2005 Rockhopper is substantially beefed up for Allmountain usage.

Both frames are using A1 allu which is essentially 6061T5 , now it seems to me that the Rockhopper has a bit more attention to detail into it and maybe some better engineering into the frame.

For pre 2005 frames, then yes, the rockhopper is more xc biased and the hardrock is a more do-it-all frame.

I've ridden my friends 2002 rockhopper a number of times

What everyone has said about the rockhopper is ture, it is slightly lighter and more XC oriented, and holds almost no advantage over the hardrock for hownhill riding...but thats only becasue theyre both horrible for DH

the hardrock has a slightly stronger frame, and is cheaper, other than that it is insuperior ot the rockhopper in every way

the rockhopper is geared towards XC, the hardrock is geared towards nothing

so basicly, if you wanna do XC riding id go rockhopper, but if you wanna save the money go hardrock til you know what kinda riding exactly you wanna do, then buy a good bike

they're both bad for dh because they were in no way intended for dh.

i just looked at the 05 rock hopper pro disc, and it is definatly an all mountain monster. its $1100 which is almost 2x as much as the 05 hardrock. The plain rock hopper is not all mountain though.

I have a 04 Hardrock Sport. I would recomend the Hardrock Pro which i believe come with disc breaks and the Marzocchi MZ COMP
