Just out of curiosity, for what purpose? Less travel is generally a boon for dirt jumping, since it promotes responsiveness and the bike pumps better. You'll also be limiting how much you can turn your bars for tricks. That'll also be a BIIIG geometry change. You might be better served with a FRHT.

Any longer travel fork is going to throw your geometry off and mess with your turning radius and everything else. The best thing to do is get a fork as close to the original travel length as the one on your bike currently. I wouldnt step up more than 10 or 20mm in fork travel due to adding more stress on the head tube.

You can, OV; but you'd do well to stick to something shorter like an older Jr. T.
These days, there are single-crowns out there with near the travel and performance of a DC. Look at some of the longer 6-7" SC offerings. They'll be lighter and nearly as laterally rigid.
