I bought those tires used at a LBS who services the local PD. Two for $5, in great condition. The PD was swapping brands so the bike shop had a few of these used Contis just laying around. They're great for the street and hard packed fire roads but marginal on loose dirt trails. I don't trust them on fast descents on dirt.

I think you should go to Kmart and buy the heaviest tires you can find. While you are there get a real heavy frame pump and one of those comfy seats, maybe a basket for the bars and bell. Maybe they will sell you a blue light too!

Anything to slow down the coppers!

The Contis look good. I've used Geax Evolution tires on my MTB for commuting, and can recommend them. Good on loose surfaces too, and easy to pedal with once you air them up a decent amount. https://www.geax.com/prodgeax/specialty/Evolution.htm It gets good reviews at MTBR too. https://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Tire/product_85946.shtml

At the two shops I was formerly at, we had police and Secret Service contracts and always used the Conti's. They are well made and really nice on pavement or light trails. Very fast rolling and smooth for a fat 26" tyre. Kenda makes a knock off of the Conti that runs about $12 and is worth the $12 but not as nice as the Conti.

I found a whole lot of new tires that fell off the back of a truck. Come to the alley behind the dumpster after 10pm. I'm sure I might be able to strike a good deal for you. Come alone. I'm a single-customer-at-a-time dealer. See you later!

Hmm what a deal, recieving stolen property :: 2 years... hmmm

Now seriously, thanks for the advice. I am really annoyed at the tires that are on the bike. I actually hit some water tonight in my beat doing about 20 between areas and completely lost comtrol and skid on the ground with the bike on top of me... that hurt...

Will be getting more tires soon, thanks

Also, for what it's worth, icebike.com likes the town & country for snowy road conditions, apparently...

You need good grip for your work. To make any tire hold up add a spinskin or a Mr. Tuffy tire liner. They go between your tube and the inside of the tire. I have the Mr Tuffy strips in my MTB and have pulled stuff out of the tire and not had a flat.

Cheers

[thread-jack response]
I like seeing bike cops on my way home. I wish I would see more. I often use a path along a river on my commute home. The path can get isolated in parts. Cops help keep the path safe and usable.

So, my58vw, I have no tire advice. I just wanted to respond to the nuts.

If you can fit a 26x2.1, go for a WTB Weirwolf, and put some tire liners and thorn-resistant tubes in it. That tire is pretty much one of the best tires out there. it may not be the festest rolling due to being 2.1, but it's extremely grippy, and takes well to loose-pack. On loosepack I can in general out-accelrate and out speed people who have mountain biked longer than me who are still using 1.9s. On hardpack I tend to loose out, but hey I can still sprint over 30mph on pavement with them for short distances, so they aren't that bad. Those tires are very solid...although the folks at teh station might make jokes about your tires having "paw print" tread

There are faster rolling tires that are better though, but i havent used them so I'm not sure how solid they feel, etc.

They're not a bad tire at all. While it has decent performance on and off road, it excells at neither. I usually sell them to people who want a street tire because they seldom off-road anymore, yet who are afraid of slicks due to their "lack of tread"
Another suggestion would be the Specialized Crossroads Armadillo

I used these for a time when I was first starting to commute and was riding that same bike on weekends doing fairly easy trails. (I kept a more off road orientated set for the hard stuff). As long as you remember that painted road surfaces plus rain water = pain you'll have little trouble with them (or any other tire really).

WTB Velociraptors? I don't think falling bike cops is very funny especially if youre the cop...it's embarassing, so get some good tires save your self some trouble, and catch some thief.

Have you noticed that these bike cops only patrol in nice areas like malls and such? Real crime is going down in the 'hood yet the bike cops are in the whitebread suburbs taking no risks. Earn some much needed credibilty and pedal that bike in South Central Los Angeles and catch some serious gang bangers.

Chief, everybody falls off now and then. Tires won't help. Suck it up and welcome to the real world.

Sounds to me like you are in desperate need of some DMR Deevee rims and some Maxxis Swapthing tyres.

Do you colonial types ride the same Colt branded bikes the filth ride in the UK?

Yeah, they always seem to be a day late and a dollar short, too. Kind of like you, responding to a thread from over a year ago.
