I tried searching, but came up with nothing...

What are you guys who are not using clip in pedals using for shoes. For the moment I do not plan on getting any spd or eggbeaters, I just want some sort of sneaker or shoe to use.

I feel stupid asking the question, but I know that I need to have a stiff sole to get job done.

If you want stiff soles, lots of mtb shoes can be used without cleats. Some have a rubber cover over the cleat holes that has to be removed to use clipless. Just leave it on and go.

That also keeps you from buying new shoes if you do decide to go clipless.

I like 3/4 high Basketball or Cross training shoes. I like the extra ankle support.

The SPD shoes do have the rubber plate if you haven't made the jump to clips. The firm bottom of the shoe does help transfer energy to the pedal.

I just made the jump to the SPD system this month. It takes some getting used to and I have taken a few falls, nothing bad so far. Overall I like the clip in system, just taking some time to get used to it.

I like FiveTen Impacts. FiveTen makes a few other similar shoes, as do companies like SixSixOne. Good pedals are just as important as shoes though.

5-10s are where it's at. i usually ride in converse allstars, but i do have 5-10s, they are super sticky, and they are comfortable not just riding but walking around. AND they look good when you are just walking around. they now have a shoe that is spd compatible, if you need that sort of thing.

5-10s and shimano DX pedals are a pretty kick ass combination.

I ride in Merrill Moab low-top hikers. They're stiff enough to be efficient, comfortable to walk in, and waterproof. Also have Vibram soles which makes them nice for scrambling around when you're off the bike.

basketball/cross-training/tennis shoes with a flat sole, so the pins in my pedals always have a place to grip into.

5.10s are good, some of the 2011 look less like special-ed shoes.

Beware with regular sneakers, you'll smack your toe off a branch or rock and it will hurt... I once watched a guy ride a local loop in keen sandals and live with all his toes attached. Yikes.

Anyone who recommends anything other than 5.10's hasn't ridden with 5.10's.
