Blur Brake Issues

A couple of years ago, as my first bike building project, I built an NOS 1994 Santa Cruz Blur frame with a really nice build kit I purchased from an online retailer. The kit came with Avid Juicy Carbon disk brakes. Well it turns out I found my niche in vintage road bikes and seldom ride the mountain bike, maybe once or twice a year. By the time I get around to riding it, it seems I have to bleed or do some kind of maintenance to the brakes. Are these brakes that touchy they need constant attention or do you think I just haven't been getting them set up properly. Is it worth a trip to the shop to let them set them up one time or would it be better for my limited use to replace them with some rim or mechanical brakes, if so any suggestions?
Thanks
